Society categorizes men and women every day. According to society Men are supposed to be incredibly masculine, and women are supposed to be feminine. The five requirements, don’t be female, be successful, be aggressive, be sexual, and be self reliant all present what masculinity is all about. In my opinion these words are extremely powerful for both genders.
In my opinion the first requirement is the most important of them all because in the first section,wood says that the not being a female “seems to be the most fundamental requirement for manhood.” Being called a girl or gay is one of the biggest insults to a male especially in today’s world. In the book wood explains that the boys are supposed to be “daredevils” and “roughnecks”. We are expected to be tough and strong from inside and out. No one ever asks us how we really feel from inside. Society just have all these policies figure out for us already if we try to break it the society judge us and think that we are outcast. I remember one time my day saying “pain equal weakness, and we should never show when we are hurting”. It is 2016 new generation and new people think of a sex as its part of a game. Being in a fraternity I have seen student’s convincing other students to have sex with different girls every weekend. Although, I have never been in this situation before but I what I do not understand is that why society have all these rules set up for us men to be more powerful, think about sexual activity 24 hours, or even have multiple women’s as your partner. Even worse is when you do not follow these rules you are called “gay”. When it comes to religion this topic goes to a whole different level.
