Introduction
Violence comes in many shapes and forms; it is a way for one to gain dominance and power over a victim. Throughout history, it could be said that women were the property of men, and according to Nies & McEwin (2015, p. 544), assault against women was not explored in America until the Civil Rights Movement of 1960s. Pinto S, Caple C (2014), stated that the most common form of domestic violence is male-to-female abuse. However in our society today, domestic violence is not just subjugated to women but to men and children as well. Such abuse does not discriminate against race, color, sex or socioeconomic background. People are subjected to IPV for several reasons; Nies & McEwin (2015), stated that low self-esteem, poverty, risky sexual behavior; eating disorders and or depression, substance abuse; and trust and relationship issues are leading issues. According to the objectives related to injury and violence prevention, IVP-33: Reduce physical assault, is a key issue that can help with IPV within the community. From a physiological perspective, when a male or female suffer gets physical injuries, it is highly likely that he or she may experience some form of emotional deficits. Domestic violence is a serious and widespread problem in our society; women continue to endure severe abuse at the hands of their intimate partners. Given the barriers to safe retreat, it is reasonable for many women to choose to remain in such relationships. Regardless of whether a woman in an abusive partnership decides to end the relationship, there may come a point when the abuser attacks her with enough force to threaten her life, forcing her to use deadly force to protect herself.
