Everyone has wanted a puppy or kitten one time or another in their life. Pets shows love, compassion, and companionship to their owners and families. They can bring people happiness, delight, and laughter, even when something tragic is happening. Unfortunately domestic violence is just one tragedy that the family pet cannot help out with. Many posters and advertisements show how domestic violence affects and hurts people of all genders, race, and age. However, very few show domestic violence affecting animals. A website advertisement, published by the Humane Society of the United States, shows a depressed dog sitting in front of a gray background. Models keep the reader interested on the page and trigger the reader into wanting to find out more about what is being advertised. In the ad, sitting in front of the gray background, is an innocent dog. The dog looks like one an average family would own, which causes the reader to have a strong connection to the dog. The dog has white paws, a white snout and chest, and a brown head, tail, and back. The dog is sitting facing towards the left side of the page, but has his head tilted and turned ever so slightly so that it makes direct eye contact with the reader. The picture is taken at an angle where the whites of the dog’s eyes appear. This creates an emotional connection with the reader because of the dog’s direct eye contact. The reader also will most likely be sympathetic and pay attention to the dog. A person looking at the Humane Society ad might overlook and not notice the black shadow of a man holding a fist. It takes a glace or two to notice the shadow, but it comes from the left corner of the page. It reaches across until the arm of the man is extended and a fist is formed. The fist is directly over the dogs head with the intent of hitting it. The advertisers know that the reader is going to notice an abused dog, but not necessarily the shadow of a violent man in the background. The shadow represents the dark and sad meaning of this advertisement. It shows how violence is directly related to the dog’s sympathetic and innocent look. The advertisers intend to scare the reader with the shadow and hope the reader to take action against animal cruelty. This could possibly overwhelm the reader with anger and lead them into wanting to find out information to help out. Advertisers uses series of words to get the reader’s attention and to provide more detail about their ad. In the Humane Society’s ad, big white letters are above the dog and in front of the shadow. It says “In a violent family everyone could be a victim.” The words “a victim” are also increased in size for the purpose of referring the dog as the victim.
