The country of Libya is located in Northern Africa. Libya shares its boarders with the Mediterranean Sea, as well as the African nations of Egypt, Tunisia, Algeria, Chad, Niger, and Sudan. Libya is composed of 1,759,540 sq. km. The capital is Tripoli. In addition to Tripoli another major city of Libya, the 2nd largest in Libya is Benghazi which gained world recognition in 2012, when the American Embassy was attacked. The history of Libya can be simplified in that over time it has been controlled by foreign countries. Libya was ruled over by the Greeks, Romans and several others. In the 7th century A.D., Libya was conquered by the Arabs. This was a key event, because when Libya was conquered by the Arabs, it adopted Islam, and the Arabic language and still remains to be the dominate language, culture and religion. As of July of 2010, Libya had 6,461,454 people, with an annual growth rate of 2.117%. The GDP per capita is only about $13,400. The majority of the population of Libya lives near the coast. Most of the land is not used with “90% of people living in less than 10% of the land.” (Libya background notes) Prior to 1959, Libya was one of the poorest countries in the world. In 1959, Oil was discovered and helped propel Libya to one of the more wealthy countries in the world. (Libya Political Risk Yearbook: country conditions p 11) Libya uses the Dinar as its currency. Libya’s workforce is made up of 59% of service industry jobs, 24% in industry-commerce, and 17% in agriculture. In Libya, 0% of workers are in unions. At the height of the conflict, about one third of the country's people were displaced. The chronic financial crisis became severe and the economy was close to collapsing. Poverty has become deeper in the rural areas of the Congo where poor people are now powerless, vulnerable and isolated. This is a big contributor to the poverty Congo is experiencing today, because little has improved and won’t improve until these problems are fixed. Overall, Central Africa’s dependence on agriculture could improve the wellbeing of the people but a long history of corruption, violence, and prevalent transportation issues have hindered an improvement in the economy resulting in poverty in the region.
Saudi Arabia, the leader of OPEC (Organization of Petroleum Exporting Companies), maintains a powerful position in negotiations with the U.S. and other countries. Its vast supply of oil directly effects per barrel pricing and is a unique bargaining tool in international politics. But Saudi Arabia is no ordinary country in today's world. Its borders are governed by a royal family of nearly 30,000 individuals, all of which share most of the wealth and almost all of the power. Its people, with foreign exceptions, are wholly Islamic and many practice the faith with a frightening sense of devotion. And despite the immense revenue generated by its oil reserves, part of its population still lives in absolute poverty. The largest petroleum-producing nation in Africa is Nigeria. The petroleum company is the main contributing factor of the GDP in the West African nation, which is also the continents, most noticeable and populous reserves. Since Nigeria was under British control it has suffered socio-economic and political adversities for decades. Corrupt domestic militias and complicity of multinational corporations have rid the nation of its natural resources. The same corporations that are ridding the land and exploring the resources have hypocritically identified Nigeria as a major concern with regard to human rights and environmental degradation. The petroleum business in Nigeria dynamically impacts its economy so much that “oil and gas exports accounted for more than 98% of export earnings and about 83% of federal government revenue, as well as generating more than 40% of its GDP.” Just to be reminiscent on this fact, the petroleum business accounts for almost the entire exporting business of a country so it raises the question of, where is the income going and how is it bring redistributed?
The question to be answered in this paper is to what extent has the resource curse affected the Nigerian economy and government? Resource curse is a term that states the observation that countries that have a plethora of natural resources (e.g. oil, coal, diamonds etc.). usually have unstable political and economic structures (Sachs, 827). Nigeria is categorized as a nation that has succumbed to the resource curse as it has an abundance of, and an overdependence on, oil, and a decreasing gross domestic product (GDP) (Samuels, 321-322). Nigeria is known for its specialization and overdependence on oil and according to Ross, nations of such nature tend to have high levels of poverty, large class gaps, weak educational systems, more corruption within the government, and are less likely to become democracies (Ross, 356).
