New fitness fads are all over the place these days, but is CrossFit here to stay? Some call it a cult, using particular language to describe workouts, fast-paced functional fitness, and a huge market behind the industry intimidates the average citizens on the outside of the fitness world. These elements create one of the largest and most popular fitness routines over the world. The Center for Disease Control states that over a third of US adults are obese, allowing the fitness and health industry to thrive over the past years as obesity grows each year. Along with obesity increasing, the diseases in humans continue to expand like heart disease, diabetes and dementia. In 2000, Greg Glassman introduced CrossFit on an online blog which grows in participation every year strengthening its position in the fitness world. In summary, CrossFit is, “Eat meat, vegetables, nuts and seeds, some fruit, little starch, no sugar. Keep intake to levels that will support exercise but not body fat. Practice and train major lifts. Master the basics of gymnastics. Bike, run, swim, row, five or six days per week, mix these elements in as many combinations. Routine is the enemy. Keep workouts short and intense”(Glassman). CrossFit is the perfect example of how the human body should work through this definition for a healthy lifestyle. Although CrossFit, from the outside is viewed as an insanely fast and slightly dangerous workout regime, the popularity continues to grow through the community that is built in each gym across the globe. ...And the winner is crowned the fittest man or woman on Earth...” Crossfit is not the answer to the worlds health issues but it is a community creating a new force in the world to make health and fitness a more important subject matter big companies cannot buy their way out of sacrificing health for consumers. The community surrounding this fitness is just one of the wonderful ways humans today have found their form of exercise. No matter the risk level, nothing is riskier than not exercising at all and being at risk for heart disease and diabetes. Although the outside world continues to believe CrossFit is dangerous, so is every other type of physical activity, as long as you find what fits best, physical activity will keep your body in the best shape it can be. Your body carries you throughout your entire lifetime, so why not make use of it with functional movements.
