Literature Review
Merriam-Webster’s dictionary defines sleep as the natural periodic suspension of consciousness during which the powers of the body are restored (sleep. 2016. In Merriam-Webster.com.). Sleep is an essential biological function with major roles in recovery, energy conservation, and survival. Sleep also appears to be important for vital function such as neural development, learning, memory, emotional regulation, cardiovascular and metabolic function, and cellular toxin removal. It has been said that we spend approximately one third of our lives asleep. Rat studies have been conducted where total sleep deprivation leads to death within 3 weeks (Mukherjee, Sutapa; Patel, Sanjay R; Kales, Stefanos N; Ayas, Najib T; Strohl, Kingman P; et al. 2015).
There are two aspects of sleep pattern, sleep quality and its quantity. Both are very important for a good healthy sleep. A sleep with good duration, but totally interrupted is never a healthy sleep. Poor sleep quality has been associated with significantly higher self-reported negative moods. It has been tested that those with poor sleep quality had significantly greater negative mood (anger, confusion, depression, fatigue, and tension), compared to those with good-quality sleep. Poor-quality sleepers also reported higher levels of stress during the week and weekends, compared to optimal-quality sleepers. Twelve percent of poor quality sleepers reported missing class three times or more in the last month because of illness, compared to less than 4% of borderline- or good-quality sleepers. ...demic performance. Extreme forms of irregular sleep schedules include all-night study sessions. No literature appears to address the association between all-nighter study sessions and GPA, but the absence of sleep is known to affect learning and performance improvement.
While sleep deprivation, irregular sleep patterns and sleepiness are highly prevalent among college students. Sleep is clearly an important aspect of successful academic and personal life in college, yet previous sleep studies suffer from shortcomings. To contribute to this dialogue, my research seeks to highlight college students’ sleep patterns as well as to identify problem areas and potential solutions because little information is available on effective ways for schools to successfully disseminate information on the importance of sleep and to potentially improve the sleep of their students.
