Autism Spectrum Disorder is a disorder that can be characterized by many different symptoms, and can be shown in various degrees of severity. Raymond, in the film Rain Man, is autistic. There are many examples within the movie in which by knowing the criteria stated in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM-V) it is evident that Raymond is autistic. Autism is a disorder that affects people all around the world, no matter the race or ethnicity. Raymond is very special to those around him, and although his brother didn’t know he existed previous to their father’s death, by the end of the movie it is evident that Raymond is important to Charlie.

This talent is exposed on multiple occasions, at the pancake house when memorizing the jukebox codes, at the psychiatrist’s office when Raymond multiplies three digit numbers in the blink of an eye, and being able to count cards at the casino to win thousands of dollars. The DSM-V recognizes this as highly restricted, fixated interests that are abnormal in intensity or focus (Neurodevelopmental Disorders). Towards the end of the movie, Charlie uses Raymond for this talent in order to win money to pay off debts, and I believe that those who have loved ones with an autism spectrum disorder would be very hurt by this, to see someone who doesn’t understand what is going on, to be used in a situation like …show more content…

The portrayal of autism and the way that others around it are impacted, to me, is correct for that period in time. Those in public were unsure of how to respond, for example, when Raymond took the “Don’t Walk’ sign literally, and stopped in the middle of the street. The man started yelling at him, not knowing that Raymond didn’t understand. Charlie’s character is a little different, I feel he wanted to show compassion for his brother, but was unsure how, and until he figured out how to show compassion, he didn’t. Closer to the end of the film Charlie showed Raymond how to dance, and he made a joke that Raymond laughed at, and I think at that point Charlie realized that he truly liked having a brother, and was beginning to understand how to communicate with him. I believe that those who have loved ones with autism would be able to relate to this. They begin unsure of how to show love and compassion, but slowly learn how and what to
