As of 2012, there are more than five hundred schools with single sex classrooms in
America (Hollingsworth). Where they do exist, they are offered as an option rather than a requirement. Schools have decided to try single sex classrooms because of the below average test scores of some boys and girls. They do it to try improving the educational and behavioral outcomes of students. Co-educational schools are more popular in society today. Yet, even how popular co-educational schools are, there have been arguments about how males and females learn differently. Not to mention all the distractions between genders in the classroom. Single sex classrooms provide less distractions and a better learning environment for both genders, which results to increases of academic success for students.
Some schools have decided to try single sex classrooms to improve the test scores of students. Test scores help teachers determine how students perform academically. Some argue that test taking does not work because of cramming. The student tries to memorize their notes the night before a huge test, and then forgets the information in a week. This may be true for some students, but "if students are truly being taught "to think," they should be able to demonstrate the quality of their thinking in a test situation" (Thernstrom 39). Students who do not learn the proper material will have a harder time with college classes, and the demand of skilled jobs. Despite the fact that the America has more co-educational schools that single sex schools, single sex schools provide a better environment for students to learn. Male and female brains are not the same, and studies have shown that they learn completely different. Single sex schooling have raised test scores, and have developed more intelligent people than co-ed schools. Students have the ability to learn the way they learn best, and not have to accommodate to the other sex 's way of learning. It saves a lot of time to teachers and allows students to develop a better work ethic. Abigail Adams describes learning as not being attained by chance, rather it must be sought for with ardor and attended to with diligence.
