Do mermaids really exist? This is a question that many have asked over the years but never really took the time to try and find out. I personally believe the existence of mermaids is definitely possible, especially considering the fact that the world has only explored five percent of our oceans. Scientists discover new sea creature species every single day but many still try to argue the fact that everything about mermaids is simply a myth. There are plenty of odd creatures we have discovered in the oceans, so why do people think it’s so ridiculous that the existence of mermaids could be possible?
Another question many tend to ask is; what is a mermaid? There are so many different ideas and opinions as to what the appearance of a mermaid actually looks like. The word mermaid itself is made of two parts; the first being the word Mer, which means sea, and maid referring to a female. There is also a male version of a mermaid called a merman. Basically, a mermaid is a creature that is half human, half fish. They have the torso of a fish and the upper body of a human being. Technically there are still two legs but these have become fused into a single tail covered in a thick scale-covered skin. Mermaids are said to grow to a length of about five and half feet and a top weight of 125 pounds. Mermaids are usually considered to be very beautiful, and extremely attractive in looks, but this is only a presumption. The actual appearance of a mermaid is nothing like the assumptions most have, and to many it may actually be considered repulsive (suddenlink.net).

Such as being submerged in saltwater non-stop and constantly being exposed to the sun. These are several of the significant justifications given as to why the existence of mermaids is absurd to many people.
The existence of mermaids has been - and most likely always will be - a very controversial and inconclusive topic. After carrying out extensive research and investigating the matter in depth, I have a better understanding from each side. Many of the speculations provide different reasons justifying the perspectives of each position. I have concluded the possibility that mermaids exist is not as ridiculous as the average uninformed person may assume. The problem simply is that people don’t like what they can’t understand.

The frame does not cut-off any of the people in the painting. The composition is centered and zoomed in to show what is going on. The composition is not simple but it is not complex either. The composition is not geometrically ordered. The people seem to be free and in motion. There is asymmetry throughout the painting. In the organization of the painting the objects appear to be crowded. There is not a lot of space between the people who appear to be fighting. The shapes of the people show that the mermaids are fighting a big guy and the placement of them shows unbalance. There are a couple objects presents. A total of three mermaids are presents including a triton and some objects are in the background represented by shadows. The sizes of the objects in the center of the composition are big compared to the ones in the background. A lot of emphasis is present in the center of the painting. The forms of the mermaids and triton are volumetric and a nice scenery is present in the background. The mermaids and trition are formed by contoured lines. Some of the lines are sharp and defined to show the natural curves on the human body and there is blurred out lines in the water to show waves and movements. The lines help give the painting a realistic feel to it. The lines are active in the reflection of the water. The color pallet present in the painting is soft with neutral warm colors. Under the sea, in an idyllic and beautiful garden, stands a statue of a young man cut out of cold stone – for the Little Mermaid who knows nothing but the sea, the statue stands as an emblem of the mysterious over-world, a stimulus for imagination and sexual desire, an incentive for expansion of experience, and most predominately, an indication that something great and all-encompassing is missing from her existence. Traces of curiosity and a vague indication of the complexities of adult desires mark the child mermaid; in such a stage of development, the statue will suffice. However, as the Little Mermaid reaches puberty, the statue must allegorically come alive in order to parallel the manifestation of her new-found adult desires – the statue must become a prince in his world of adulthood above the sea. Thus, powered by an insistent and ambiguous longing for self-completion, the Little Mermaid embarks on a journey of self-discovery, and, to her ultimate misfortune, prematurely abandons her child-like self as sexual lust and the lust for an adult life takes hold of her.
My vomit clouded the ocean surface with a purple-brown color before fading below the depths. On the other side of the vessel, I re-equipped my mask and plunged into the water to be greeted by my aunt – she was to be my snorkeling partner as she had much experience in the depths of Hawaii. When I submerged my head it was almost as if I had entered a new world. This unseen dimension housed a coral reef that vibrantly shone with a mixture of bright reds and deep blues. The reef almost seemed to pulsate as thousands of fish darted in and out of their subterranean homes. The water was thick with salt and teemed with plankton. We often resurfaced to point out fish to each other. I remember my aunt telling me of the environmental dangers of touching the still-living coral. “If you pierce its skin it will likely become infected and die, and all of the fish who live in it will die too,” she expertly explained. Once upon a time, there was a 16 year old mermaid princess named Ariel who gave up her voice, an important part of her identity, in order to be with a man who she became infatuated with at just one glance. Ariel has a very traditional gender-stereotypical role in the film, as the helpless, clueless, naive, physically weak, submissive, and attractive female protagonist that Disney films, especially the classics, portray so often (England). There is a lot of controversy surrounding this film in regards to its patriarchal ideals. The Little Mermaid, like most media, is build for the ‘male gaze’, a term coined by Laura Mulvey that suggests that visual entertainment, such as movies, are structured to be viewed by a masculine consumer. I will argue that the male gaze perpetuates harmful gender-stereotypes in The Little Mermaid.
Do mermaids exist or not? Mermaid sightings have been reported as early as 586 A.D. A great historian named Pliny the Elder was convinced of the existence of mermaids and described them as “rough and scaled all over.” Thousands of sailors across the globe have reported seeing mermaids swimming off the bows of their ships. Even Christopher Columbus reported an encounter with a mermaid; in January of 1493 Columbus reported that he saw three mermaids frolicking in the ocean just off Haiti. ( "Unknown Explorers - Mermaids") Columbus stated that the creatures “came high out of the water” but were “not as pretty as they are depicted, for somehow the face looked more like a man’s.” ( "Unknown Explorers - Mermaids") What he saw could have easily been a type of animal he did not recognize.
Hundreds of people, who get in the ocean every year, are almost none that encounter sharks. Even if you're lucky enough to see a shark big enough to bite you, you're much likely to die from a heart attack than getting bit by one. Shark attacks are mistakes and the idea of a shark off every beach waiting for people to come in the water is completely untrue. I will inform you on the background knowledge of sharks and the reasons why humans should not be afraid only aware.
About 80 percent of the Earth is covered in water. With the majority of life on this planet residing in the liquid we like to call the essence of life, we as humans represent a minority on this planet. Much of the underwater world remains a mystery to us, with the giant squid being one of the greatest mysteries of them all. How close are we to actually solving the mystery of this deep water giant?
...dersen's original story traces the little mermaid's journey to obtain a soul, something she cannot complete without both the help of a man and the sacrifice of her own femininity in order to assimilate to a patriarchal world. Disney's story takes the subjectivity of femininity even further by replacing the little mermaid's spiritual, self-fulfilling aspiration of an immortal soul with a lustful desire for love instead. The little mermaid's decision to give up her voice for legs in both Andersen and Disney's stories transforms her into a "woman [that] man wants her to be" rather than a "woman for herself" (Sells 180). Both versions of the mermaids hold the belief that they can gain love by suppressing their true identities. However, since they have no verbal communication skills and are mute, they can express their personalities only by relying on their appearances.
From an early age we get bombarded by fairy tales distinctly known for their images of fantasy and “happily ever after’s” in an attempt to mold our perceptions of the world and our behaviors. We are taught to distinguish between right and wrong and through these fairy tales, with their usual story lines of good triumphing over evil, a sense of hope and innocence gets etched into our psyche. Perhaps one of the most well-known and beloved fairy tales of them all, The Little Mermaid, has not only captivated the imaginations of both young and old but has been somewhat misinterpreted and recreated to from its original version by Hans Christian Andersen to become more appropriate and favored by society. Although the Disney recreation is quite more “kid friendly” and whimsical, it has however lost its essence and some of its morals; replacing them with different ideas and themes.
