Diversity is around us everywhere we look, some of us may not realize how important it is to be able to relate to others, even if they are different than us. Those who are different than us may have a different skin color, sexual preferences or speak a different language. The information from this class has shown me how different people can be. I have come to understand people a little better and perceive them differently now after the last nine weeks of class.
I now understand that diversity is all around us. If it was not for diversity we would all be the same. There would never be any challenges in our lives to make us better. When we go through diversity we learn new ways to better ourselves. Growing up, my family wasn’t very diverse. It wasn’t until I was older and married into a family with diversity that I learned and accepted a diverse culture. When I was younger, I thought everything would be easy. I grew up quickly when I turned 18 and became a resident firefighter. I started to look for ways to challenge myself to do better, learn to be a leader and set an example.
In this class, I learned more about my family, myself and my cultural background. My family is Native American. Growing up, my family never really embraced the Native American culture. We never lived on a reservation and the only time we went to the reservation was in July for fireworks. Since becoming older and growing up, I have found to embrace my heritage and be proud of where I have come from. This is one of the reasons that I decided to leave the city police department I was at and start working at a tribal police department. This allows me to help embrace my culture while helping and serving at the same time.

...are of. I learned a lot about these groups and think that because of this class, I will be a better person at work, in school and at home. It’s going to make me think before I act or speak in future situations and be more aware of who my audience is. Thinking before acting is a good way to put it. Look at the situation in front of you and look at the whole picture. I will try to remember that before I judge someone, I need to take a step back and look at the big picture. I need to look at the person as an individual and not a stereotype. I think that if more of us did this as a whole, society would be a better place for everyone.
