Malcolm Forbes, publisher of Forbes Magazine stated that, “Diversity: is the art of thinking independently together.” When considering a four-year university it can be nerve wrecking when picking out the best school. In some cases, when students attend the university they are accepted into, it may be based upon the cost, scholarship, location, legacy, or even a simple visit of the school’s mission statement page. Yet there has been questioning from media sources, such as the U.S News & World Report, on is there enough diversity in the college admission process and if so does it even matter. The affirmative action plan may be used immediately. Affirmative action refers to admission policies that provide equal access to education for those groups that have been historically excluded or underrepresented such as women and minorities. For example, In April 2003, Barbara Grutter a white, female resident of Michigan applied to the University of Michigan law school with a 3.8 GPA and a 161 LSAT score and was denied due to the universities state of interest of having “critical mass of students from minority groups.” There was speculations about the livelihood of Miss Grutter, reporter started that Miss Grutter was among the poor and faculty members felt that she was no use to the University of Michigan law school. Even though the university felt like they were providing opportunities to student by letting them know that their university is also open to all, it was noted that a student was not admitted due to her diverse circumstances. The court did what was seem fit and did not see positive use of the mission statement, and made the University of Michigan change their
