According to the book entitled, Diversity and Public Administration: Theory , Issues, and Perspectives by Mitchell F. Rice, he stated that many theorists had their concept of diversity (Rice, 2010). E. Cross and other theorist define diversity as a component focus on race, ethics, or gender categories. These three components are important because it is a way to identify and these categories stay the same. Another way diversity is defined is that theorists focus on difference of the group that were evaluated are income , region, and education background. Dow Corning defined is when organizations benefit from individuals’ experiences and talents that organizations can utilize. Other theorists defined diversity as difference within social group. Over the years, diversity was defined as cultural difference, sex orientation, gender, age, physical ability, socioeconomic levels, occupational experiences, region (Rice, 2010). In the twenty-first century, organizations are become more diverse workplace. Private and public organizations discovered that diversity in the workplace can have some advantages. One of the advantage having diversity in the workplace is employees have different cultural backgrounds which bring unique experience and perception to the table in work groups or teams. Organizations can utilize employees’ knowledge and skills to increase productivity and solutions to challenging problems. Another advantage of diverse work environment is it promotes personal growth. By employees being expose to new ideas, different culturally , and perspectives, it teaches employees to have a clear understand and gaining a positive point of view of different cultures. Males, females, and minorities should be given the same opportunity to advance with opportunity. The Glass Ceiling, Affirmative Action, and Equal Employment Opportunity Act should be used to protect all individuals regardless of race, gender, ethnic background in the workplace. Over the years, position bias has become an issue in the workplace. The positions males are able to hold in the workplace is upper manager and CEO positions. Female positions are normally low management and entry level positions. Sexual harassment is still issue in the workplace. Public and private organizations have created polices to prevent sexual harassment and it assist them from having any future lawsuits against them( Wallen, 2015).
