Discrimination is defined as an “unfair treatment of a person, racial group, minority, or an action based on prejudice”, it means to “distinguish, single out, or make a distinction between two people” (Gender). There are many ways that someone might be discriminated against in the workplace. Often you cannot pick up a newspaper and read through it without reading about at least one workplace discrimination case. Workplace discrimination can be anything from being treated unfavorably because of your skin color to something as simple as a personality trait. Whether the discrimination comes from a supervisor, co-worker or even a customer, it is considered illegal. The US. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) is responsible for enforcing federal laws that make it illegal to discriminate against a job applicant or an employee in the workplace (United States). The most common types of workplace discrimination are gender, religion, racial and age discrimination. We will discuss each of these types of workplace discrimination in the following paragraphs.
The number one way a person is discriminated against in the United States is because of their gender. Gender discrimination is defined as anything that occurs when an individual is treated differently on account of their gender and may affect anything from hiring decisions to promotions (Gender). Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 is the primary federal law that outlaws harassment based on sex or gender (Gender). As I have shown you with numerous examples, discrimination comes in many forms in the workplace. Research shows that “79 percent of people will experience some form of discrimination in their lifetime” (United States). These instances can drastically affect workplace morale and productivity. Many laws have been passed at the local, state and national levels to curb discrimination, but time has proven these laws are difficult to enforce. Discrimination is illegal and it’s time to put an end to it. Discrimination doesn’t discriminate, so why would you?
