What is discrimination? Discrimination could be best described as the practice of unfairly treating a person or group of people differently from other people or groups of people (merriam webster). It is the ability to recognize the differences between two people, rather if it is based upon groups of a different age, gender, race, religion or even background. Discrimination is still relevant in today’s society. There are still noticeable gaps between wealth, status, and power. Two of the most common types of discrimination found in the world today are race and gender. Race discrimination is better known as Racism. It is the discrimination due to the race of a person. When a person is being discriminated against because of their gender in the workforce, a person would be able to notice problems within many areas of their job. It is clear that work opportunities are prioritized over women. Some Examples of sex discrimination by gender include problems within hiring. When a person applies for a job they are greatly qualified for but end up not getting the job to a person of less qualification, which happens to be a male, could be considered as discrimination. It can also be seen in the reasoning of firing a women, while a male in the same position as you that has worked there for a smaller amount of time doesn’t get fired. The ability to be promoted is also another way of noticing that a woman is being discriminated against. If you, as a woman that has been working at a job for a long period of time and a male employee that is new and younger to the job gets the promotion instead of the woman that’s been there the longest amount of time. All are types of discrimination and many more types of discrimination for women include, benefits, pay, sexual harassment, gender identity, and sex stereotyping (Fighting for Women’s Equality, n.d.). Even though most people know and want to put an end to discrimination, most people aren’t aware that they are being discriminatory towards people. Discrimination in race can also be found in all of the same things that are found in genre discrimination. The only difference between the two is that instead of the reasons for not giving someone an equal opportunity is because of their ethnicity, not their gender
