Discrimination and The Fairness of All Marylanders Act of 2014

Across the United States, there are around seven hundred thousand transgender individuals (Times Union 1). Majority of these individuals face discrimination at work, school, housing, healthcare, etc. For instance, ninety percent of transgender people are discriminated at work, while more than half have been harassed as they access public services. No doubt, transgender people are giving their best efforts to obtain freedom from discrimination all over the country, and through their efforts, they are moving forward. Individual states are beginning to pass non-discrimination laws pertaining to transgender people, and recently, Maryland is showing its support.
On Tuesday March 4, 2014, The Maryland Senate passed a civil rights bill, called the Fairness of All Marylanders Act of 2014, which prohibits discrimination against transgender individuals. This allows transgender people to receive less pressure when it comes to “…employment, housing, and public places such as hotels, restaurants, theaters, and sports venues” (Kunkle 1). The bill received little opposition in the Senate and received support by most democratic senators. Unfortunately, the bill is too vague and allows sex offenders and pedophiles to take advantage of it. In addition, the “…law would subject people to embarrassing invasions of privacy from transgender people in locker rooms or restrooms” (Kunkle 1). Overall, this bill is causing transgender individuals to regress in society rather than progress in it.
As soon as the bill was effortlessly passed, individuals opposing the law immediately expressed their concerns and formulated valid points. Sex offenders or pedophiles, through this law, may legally enter the opposite gender’s restrooms and traumatize young childr...
