After watching the video Digital Nation, I came in the conclusion that I agree with the overall message. Although, some participants in the video are pointing out how important the digital technology is for our society, I believe that it is harming us at the same time. If we are not careful and slow down, we may lose important characteristic of human thinking, what is our mind.
With this said, I would like to point out the first problem of the digital technology that was observed in the video. Actually it was observed at MIT University and the subject was multitasking. As a young generation of our society is dependable on digital technology, with the needs of staying in touch, they think that they can handle several tasks at the same time. Doing home work, chatting on-line, checking and replying to the email, goggling, watching movies on You-tube, and many more. An interesting research was conducted at MIT, to prove this theory of multitasking. A carefully selected sample was picked to be observed, in which the students were known for multitasking of five to eight tasks at the same time. The results were stunning. Although, the students taught that they did well in the test, in reality they did very poorly. The summary of this research was straight to the point that multitasking does not make us better. Actually it makes us worse, because the distraction of all other tasks are interfering with the capability of being fully concentrated in one task. I would like to provide an solution that was used, but the only solution I could think of is the overall message of the video. We need to slow down and think what kind of affect the digital technology has on our society.
My second example would be business economics. As described in the video, many businesses are required extensive business travel, which can become expensive. In the goal of cutting cost on travel, but still be able to hold well organized meeting, the virtual business life came into consideration. This allows business to be hold meetings at much more interesting places than office and it allows people to participate from around the world. As I was watching the video, I was thinking about the pros and cons of such a meeting. The pros would be that even less confident person, with less experience could present themselves as somebody important and for instance somebody they are not.
The topic of technology and our society has become a very controversial subject today. Many people believe that technology is an essential component of our modern world, helping us to improve communication from farther distances as well as giving us easy access to important information. On the other hand, there is the opinion that too much technology is affecting social interactions and our basic development. “Technology…is a queer thing, it brings you great gifts with one hand, and stabs you in the back with the other.” (Carrie Snow.) The CBC Documentary “Are We Digital Dummies” displayed the pros and cons when it comes to modern technology that we use in the western world everyday.
In the article,“Multitasking is actually kind of a problem for kids and adults” by Hayley Tsukayama the author went into detail about how parents and their children view their personal media habits. One of the ways that the parents and children viewed their media habits as was feeling the need to respond to texts and notifications immediately. “More than 1,200 parents and teens surveyed, 48 percent of parents and 72 percent of teens said they felt the need to respond to texts and notifications immediately, almost guaranteeing distractions throughout the day” (Tsukayama). This article can be connected to “The Epidemic of Media Multitasking While Learning” both of the articles discussed the different factors of media multitasking among individuals. The article from The Washington Post website gave great insight on multitasking and rather it is bad for students when it comes to learning. I believe that the issue being discussed is very relevant because if students are easily distracted by technology while in their learning environment it results in them not learning
Since the Industrial Revolution, technology has become an essential tool in human life. Technology impacted lives in society by offering a way to “multitask” by using two or more technological devices. Technology and internet offers the facility to do homework faster through Google, while listening to music on Pandora or YouTube. Sometimes, you can even talk on the phone while you listen to music and do homework. All you need in order to multitask is to have all the technological devices needed. Many people consider technology as a positive change in our lives, because of the facilities it offers us. However, many other persons, like Christine Rosen, think that technology instead of improving our lives, it has only changed it negatively. Technology, in fact has provided us with many facilities, however such facilities are affecting our interactions with the physical space.
When thinking of killing, drugs and nudity, I’m pretty sure not many people think of positive ideas. Electronics, such as television and computers, show these kinds of things regularly. Despite this explicit material, some people see the constantly improving technology as a wonderful addition to our lives. Yet as time passes, more and more people start to have doubts about what these developments in technology are leading to. Kids and teens should be playing and using their imaginations; instead they devote countless hours on various electronics ranging from tablets and computers to phones and TV’s. These inventions often show explicit and inappropriate material which corrupts children, and are slowly ruining society’s social skills.
Whether technology is with us or hurting us, we still have to use it and it affects our lives daily. We need it to get a hold of someone. We need it to do our jobs. Most importantly, we need it to keep our lives away from harm. There are many ways to manipulate technology, but technology has more good to it than bad. There are those who use it for good, like investigators so they can figure out the real story. Then there are those who use it for bad, just like those who commit cyber bullying along with other minor and major things. We need technology regardless if people argue they like or not. There is no way to stop technology and keeping people from making it better. With the developments in technology, we may be able to enjoy all the pricey luxuries and still enjoy life at the same time.
In the video, "Can Too Much Technology Hurt a Child's Developmental Growth?" the average teenager engages in more than 11 hours of technology based items per day. The video also mentions that in a 2012 study, half of all teenagers were sending 50 text messages per day including 34 texts at night when they are supposed to be in bed. These figures are astounding! Concentration, much needed sleep and one-on-one facial interaction is being lost. This demonstrates that our cognitive culture is being hindered. Children today, are not learning traditional social protocols, such as how to listen and communicate with others. I loved how the video makes clear that there is no substitute for the real world and that parents need to be proactive in limiting their children's screen-time. In the video "Put Down That Smartphone! Finding Ways to Disconnect," many people and companies are beginning to see the importance of technology free time periods. Some companies are giving workers a week off throughout the year to unplug and recharge. Other companies are providing an email-free evening to aid with this growing problem. By doing so, hopefully this will help somewhat aid in protecting future generations from the growing technology
Technology is an everyday part of our society but what happens when technology starts to ruin society? Over the Easter break I went on a date with my friend Natalie, we decided to go bowling and then grab something to eat for diner. We are bowling and I grab my ball throw it down the lane and get a strike I turn around to cheer with her but she was too busy playing on her phone to see what had just happened. Then I take her to her favorite restaurant and the whole time we were waiting for our food, Natalie just looked through Instagram and Twitter. She spent more time with her phone on our date then she did with me.
The past two decades have overwhelmed the human experience with technology, along with all its distractions. The direct relationship between the mind and the body’s ability to adjust from these distractions can be extremely difficult .Further research has shown that it has become an addiction for many. Technology has significantly improved our lives as a whole through experiences such as Global Positioning System (GPS), cell phones and social networking allowing us to communicate with different people around the world. These technologies make our daily lives easier and more efficient. However, this also discusses the effects of technology on various aspects of our everyday personal experiences both with each other and with the world around us. On the other hand technologies such as cell phones have become a problem in getting students to focus in class and distracting drivers and thus, resulting in vehicle accidents. Technology is beneficial, but can also become an inescapable distraction in our lives. It is important to view technology as having the ability to make our lives better or worse, yet also as having the ability to change our personal lives and behavioral patterns.
There has been a long lasting debate in the resent years on whether or not technology has a positive or negative impact on today’s kids. As the years move on, the negative effects have begun to outnumber the positive. The generations previous spent their childhood making forts, fishing, and using their imaginations, contrary to today’s generations who spend their free time texting, playing video games, and watching videos. Damaging effects such as decreases in school performances, addiction to electronics, and lack of brain development have all been linked to the electronic media stimulation. In order to prevent the future generation from following in the current generations footsteps, one must full comprehend just how much technology impacts
Technology has more negative effects on today’s society than positive. Due to technology in the past few decades Canine Shock Collars have been increasingly popular. Students in school pay more attention to texting than they do their classes. Violent addictive video games have made their way into American homes. Parents encourage their children to not text as much, but them to face the problem of constant communication. The Internet gives the students easier ways to cheat in school, and reinforces laziness. Internet Porn gives every bored male a chance to look at the seediest film in the comfort of his own home. Technology has taken the innocence and mystery away from the American family.
The opinions of many people vary on technology and the effects it has on today’s society. Some say that it’s more beneficial than anything, others completely disagree, and some have mixed emotions. Would you rather read out of a book, or play online learning games with a possible risk of eye problems? It’s about taking matters into your own hands. 71% of people believe technology has improved their lives. 76% of people completely disagree by saying that technology creates a lazy society and that is distracting and corrupting. Daily life with technology is also another huge issue in society. According to a survey taken in January 2013, people feel their work productivity has dropped 8% in the last year. They also felt that their relationships with their family at home dropped 4% in the past year. The opinions vary, but they are needed to show how technology is affecting different people.

Technology has completely changed the culture of this world. We live in a world where our lives are constantly in motion because of portable devices. Different forms of technology have changed the way and the places that information is accessed. Fast entertainment is now the center of everyone's day. Mostly everything in our lives has something to do with entertainment. We are all seeking and craving entertainment all throughout the day just like fast food. Reading the article “Fast Entertainment and Multitasking in an Always-on World” by S. Craig Watkins, he share his views about multitasking with technology and the unlimited access to fast entertainment. People always feel the need to be connected and get their few minutes of media for the day, with technology being more accessible, more people are media consuming, and the youths are accessing the media more often and tend to access multiple things at once.
To sum up, people can see numerous positive effects of technology on different aspects of human life such as education, agriculture, personal safety, and the environment; however, not everyone thinks about its downsides. Though modern technology indeed facilitates people’s tasks and duties, it may weaken human bodies, ruin nature, and destroy good values regarding social communication.
Everywhere we look we see students with IPods, tablets, laptops, and cell phones. They are constantly connected to the internet in some form or fashion. Many students are using several of these devices at the same time. Most if not all students believe that they are getting more done in less time but what they fail to realize is that there are adverse effect to multimedia multitasking. Multimedia Multitasking effects the way we think, our concentration, the way we communicate, learn and respond to the world around us.
