Loudspeakers and Line Arrays play a vital role in live sound reinforcement. The main goal of line arrays is to evenly distribute the full range of frequencies and ‘loudness’ of the performance to the audience, no matter where the people are standing. Stage hands and audio technicians work together before a live performance in order to achieve the optimum sound quality for the audience’s satisfaction during their experience of the live event. Typically, traditional line arrays are set up by technicians on ground level. With the help of motorized hoists, the speakers are hanged or “flown” to be rigged at a specific height and achieve its J shaped curve- provided that the stage or venue is able to properly accommodate the speakers’ weight and height. Every horizontal or vertical calibration and directional approximation of the speakers has to have been completed before the array is flown. Recently, it has become possible to steer or point a line array without physically moving the loudspeakers, thanks to digital technology.
Certain companies like Renkus-Heinz and Martin Audio have developed various loudspeaker arrays that are digitally and electronically controlled. While the specifics, why’s and how’s of each company’s technology may vary, it seems that the main purpose and goal of each is the ability to calibrate the positioning of the line arrays’ speakers after being flown.

The current technology that allows loudspeaker arrays to be digitally controlled is probably not perfect yet. However, it is undoubtedly an advance in the audio industry in terms of innovation and showcase of possibilities for live sound reinforcement. Perhaps comparable to the time when digital audio work stations started to rise, some may dislike or even frown upon new ideas- but over time, it is very likely that this technology will find its place in the world of audio.

The purpose of this experiment was to determine whether if the sound is affected when it travels through different length pipes. The method used to do this experiment was created by using 5 different PVC pipes in the lengths of 10, 20, 30, 40, and 50 centimeters. Then, using a tuning fork, sound will be produced on one end of the PVC pipe and measured with a decimeter on the other end. This experiment was recorded using 5 trials for each independent level and the average decibels (dB) for each pipe length were recorded.

For the rest of us novice listeners and fans, we believe what we hear through our speakers or played over the radio are the true skilled professional musicians, soaring at their craft. Most contemporary music, from pop to R&B and acid jazz to the sophisticated realm of orchestral film scores, has been modernized by several inventions encased within the studio. The art of audio engineering has taken on new forms, from the nuts and bolts, "plug it in, and see if it works" era into the digital world, because of these wonderfully tragic solutions to a higher pace of life. A musician's art have been made solely because of it, and others have been destroyed and humiliated by it. The complex new inventions of technology shape the adaptive method of studio recording and production however caused a drastic negative musical degrading of our beloved art.

The Celine Dion concert had a very elaborate stage set up with beautiful props and decorations, that seemed to magically change to match each song she sang. When it comes to recording in a modern day environment DAW’s (digital audio workstation) are an essential piece of equipment if professional standard results are desired. Although DAW’s are considered a modern technological advancement the first attempt at a DAW was in 1977 and it came from Dr. Tom Stockham’s Soundstream (See references for full description) digital system. It had very powerful editing capabilities and for its time a very advanced crossfader but was still primitive compared to today’s standard. At this moment there are 100’s of DAW’s on the market but arguably there some obvious leaders. Avid’s Pro Tools has been the go to DAW for any professional studio for the past 20 years and although there have been rumors of Avid going out of business and the features in Pro Tools becoming dated, Pro Tools is still a viable option for studios worldwide. Logic Pro has risen to the fore-front of the industry in recent years due to its easy to use interface that is possible of producing professional results. Ableton Live strays away from a hardware instrument music environment to cater for electronic music users. Audio to MIDI is a main focus along with the critically acclaimed Max for Live used for live performances by many current EDM artists. Each individual DAW has its own pros and cons and comparing these can highlight which DAW is the best for what task.
