The digital divide, how can we fix it? The digital divide is the gulf between those who have ready access to computers and the Internet, and those who do not. This may sound like an easy fix, just give everyone a computer with internet on it! But, it isn’t just that simply. Just because everyone is provided with a computer, does that mean they know how to run it? Someone who has never used the internet before, would they be able to jump right on the computer and use it? There isn’t just as easy fix for the digital divide, it would be a long process with many steps.

The first step I believe would need to be to provide everyone with a computer, tablet, smartphone, or other device. None of these other steps could be possible without this first crucial one. The digital divide can’t be broken if not everyone has access to these things. It also can’t be broken if people are provided with these devices, but don’t or can’t use them. So, everyone would need to be provided with computer, phone, tablet, whatever would be best for them. Another thing I would do is fill them with software and programs to make it easier for the person to use. This would be to give them a reason to want to use it. If someone doesn’t have a reason to use a computer, tablet, or phone they aren’t going to use it. So this step would be to help people find a reason to use technology. There is something for everyone when it comes to technology, whether it be showing grandpa Facebook or showing grandma how to look up recipes on google. Lately my mom has discovered Pinterest and my dad discover YouTube and they are amazed with both.
