A. Antipsychotic Medication
Chlorpromazine is an antipsychotic medication. It helps people feel less nervous, be able to have clearer thoughts, and allows for everyday life to go on. When used for children or youth who have a psychotic disorder, schizophrenia, or a bipolar disorder, it keeps them calm and they are able to focus. According to David’s Canadian Drug Guide for Nurses (2015), it is a “second-line treatment for schizophrenia and psychoses after failure with atypical antipsychotics. Hyper-excitable, combative behaviour in children” (pg 303). It targets the brain to repair natural substances that are out of balance. A common brand name that is used is called Thorazine. It can be taken through oral tablets with a glass of milk or water, or it can be taken with food. Taken with a drink or food lessens the chance of gastric irritation. This medication is usually taken 2-4 times a day. (WebMD, 2016).
There are many side effects that may come with taking this medication. “Drowsiness, dizziness, dry mouth, blurred vision, tiredness, nausea, constipation, weight gain, and troubles sleeping may occur” (WebMD, 2016). For all these medications it is important for the EA and everyone who will be in care for the child to know and understand the side effects because some of the side effects can really hurt or potentially lead to death. Knowing what medications the child is on helps the EA know what to look for if a reaction was to happen, so that they can call whomever they need to as soon as possible. Although most of the time the EA won’t administer most medication, it is still important to know. Also knowing what types of medication a child is on can help the EA with helping the child be able to do everything to their full potential and as independent as can be.
