It is possible for a person to be both healthy and unhealthy at the same time. This paradigm is possible because of the different types of contexts that health is used with. So, what factors influence the different types of meaning that people associate with health? The meaning of health changes based on whether the connotative or denotative meaning is used and what schema is/are associated with it. In order to understand what the definition of health is, the meaning of denotation must be understood. Denotation is the reference of a word; it is the formal definition of a word (Allan). The denotative meaning of health, according to Merriam-Webster is “the condition of being well or free from disease”. This denotative term is often used in a …show more content…
Connotation is the specific person or person’s attitude toward the word (Allan). So a healthcare worker might use the connotative meaning of the word health when taking to a person that has had a disease for most of his/her life. The reason for this is because even though he/she might not be healthy in the denotative meaning he/she is healthy according to his/her regular standards. The term can also be altered when taking about items that attribute to a healthy lifestyle. For example, red meat is a healthy option for a person who is anemic, but red meat is very bad for someone’s health if he/she has high cholesterol. Other factors that might place a person into a healthy or unhealthy category is society. An example of this is a person with no arm past the elbow. Society might think that this person has an abnormality which would categorize him into an unhealthy category when really the reason for the partial limb loss was a home accident and in reality, the person is very healthy. This shows that health cannot be accurately determined in a denotative meaning without knowing someone’s full history. Most of the time, people determine their healthy by using a connotative meaning. ‘Health’ is the ‘absence of disease’ within the physical and mental entities of the body and mind. This is a definition given in the literal sense of the word, although what it essentially translates to for one individual may not mean the same to another. A person can be unhealthy or lead an unhealthy lifestyle without the affliction of disease. Kathryn Mansfield has a subjective view and her account is relatively holistic and all-encompassing of her potential, as a person in body and mind, “By health, I mean the power to live a full adult, living, breathing life in close contact with what I love. As defined in the World Health Organization’s constitution (2006), health is the state of absolute well-being in the physical, mental, and social aspects and not merely the absence of disease or frailty. The definition of health adapted by most scholars encompasses all the dimensions of a person’s well-being, not only focusing on physical health. It also emphasizes that health does not equate to not having any sickness.
The negative is where health is perceived to be the absence of disease or abnormalities in the body. This is similar to the positive is where health focuses on the presence of certain attributes, rather than the absence of them. This is different from the world health organisation (WHO 2008) where health requires a person to be completely physically, mentally and socially well, but not just the absence of disease and illness. This also requires the person to be socially and economically productive in order to be seen as healthy. According to Mildred Blaxter (1990), there are different ways of defining health. Furthermore, disease can be seen as the presence of an abnormality in part of the body or where there is a harmful physical change in the body such as broken bones. So, illness is the physical state of disease that is to say, the symptoms that a person feels because of the disease. However, there is some limitation of these definitions which is not merely an absence of disease but a state of physical, mental, spiritual and social wellbeing. (Haralambos and Holbon 2009 p: 50).
The notion of health is contextual and an interactive, dynamic process between person and environment (Schim et al, 2007). Both wellness and illness are conceptualized by the ‘person’, existing on a continuum across the lifespan (Arnold & Boggs, 2001).

In this essay I am going to investigate whether health is easily defined as the absence of disease or physical injury.
