In this paper, we will discuss the different types of Child abuse and neglect. How it affects all ages, genders, races and ethnicities are represented among both perpetrators and victims of abuse and neglect, with no particular group are protected. In 2005, an estimated 3.3 million children were allegedly abused or neglected and underwent investigations or assessments by state and local child protective services agencies. Approximately 940,500 children were determined to be victims of child maltreatment (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2007). In 2005, an estimated 1,460 children died due to child abuse or neglect. More than 75 percent of children who were killed were younger than 4 years old. More than 40 percent of child fatalities were attributed to neglect. Physical abuse was also a major contributor to child fatalities (USDHHS, 2007). Child abuse” means harm or threatened harm to a child 's health or welfare that occurs through non accidental physical or mental injury, sexual abuse, sexual exploitation, or maltreatment, by a parent, a legal guardian, or any other person responsible for the child 's health or welfare. “Child neglect” means harm or threatened harm to a child 's health or welfare by a parent, legal guardian, or any other person responsible for the child 's health or welfare that occurs through either of the following: Negligent treatment, including the failure to provide adequate food, clothing, shelter, or medical care. Conclusion Preventing child abuse and neglect is a powerful investment that saves lives. Sadly ,it’s hard to say that we do a lot to help. Another thing I have learned is to teach our children the proper names of their body parts. As I watch the stewards for children it was an eye opener for me because I tough my son that his penis was a hot dog. But after watching that and the little girl in the video told the teacher that her daddy ate her cookie last night, what she was referring to was her vagina. I feel if we should talk about child abuse more often, especially the younger generation. Teach them why they are young they will be more aware of what’s right and what’s wrong.
