Different Teaching Philosophies
There are many different styles of teaching philosophies that regard themselves as the teaching foundation of how classrooms function when it comes to learning. This paper focuses on the two distinct teaching philosophies that circle around the way teachers teach and students learn. The two categorical philosophies are teacher-centered and student-centered, which are self-explanatory on what it pertains to. According to Sadker & Zittleman (2010), the table they provide include specific philosophies of student-centered and teacher-centered philosophies (p. 291). The following table consists of brief descriptions of: Progressivism, Social Reconstructionism, Extentialism, Essentialism, and Perennialism. Unfortunately, not all philosophies will be discussed here, except for two philosophies that are considered to have bipolar ideals; Progressivism and Essentialism. Progressivism is described as, “Flexible; integrated study of academic subjects around the needs and experiences of students” (Sadker & Zittleman, 2010, p. 291). Essentialism on the other hand is, “Core curriculum of traditional academic topics and traditional American virtues” (Sadker & Zittleman, 2010, p. 291).
Teacher-Centered Philosophy
Essentialism deals with the foundation of essential skills, according to Roberson (2014) it, "emphasizes the mastery of essential skills, facts, and concepts that form the basis of the subject matter” (p. 334). It also focuses on key subject areas in the class that are crucial when running a classroom based on this teacher-centered philosophy. All in all, the vast knowledge gained from researching these two philosophies have enlightened and increased my ideas on how to run the classroom later in my profession. Just the description of the two philosophies and the intended results has caught my attention on ways to manage a classroom. Essentialism being, “Core curriculum of traditional academic topics and traditional American virtues” (Sadker & Zittleman, 2010, p. 291). Meanwhile progressivism refers to, “Flexible; integrated study of academic subjects around the needs and experiences of students” (Sadker & Zittleman, 2010, p. 291). Later on in my profession, I intend to meet the needs of all students by trying to mix both philosophies, instead of just using simply enforcing just one.
