REVIEW ON SOME POPULAR METHODS OF IMAGE SEGMENTATION Ria Pal, Rima Das, Payel Bose, Kasturee Saha, Tsheten Yanki Bhutia Information Technology, 4th Year, 8th Semester, Jalpaiguri Government Engineering College 1. ABSTRACT One of the most important components in image analysis and many computer vision tasks is Image segmentation. The problem related to efficient segmentation in still images is of great practical importance in image editing. It has been a great interest of research for a very long time and still is. The common tools used by classical image segmentation includes texture, colour or edge (contrast) information. With the growing interest of image segmentation, this paper gives a brief overview about image segmentation and the …show more content…

Some of the important applications of image segmentation are face detection, face recognition, finger print recognition. Practical application of image segmentation includes filtering of noisy images, medical applications such as locating tumours, measuring tissue volumes, computer guided surgery, diagnosis, treatment planning, study of anatomical structure. Image segmentation also helps to locate objects in satellite images (roads, forests, etc.). Many segmentation methods have been proposed but the choice of the method depends on the type image and the characteristics of the problems related to that particular …show more content…

Image segmentation algorithms like edge detection, line detection, and point detection are included. 3.1 Edge based segmentation- In many image processing applications, edge plays a very important role. They provide an outline of the object. An edge is a set of connected pixels which lies on the boundary between two regions that differ in grey value. Those pixels are known as Edge points which are on the edge. An edge is usually extracted by computing the derivative of the image function. To identify the discontinuities in the image, edges are detected. By identifying the pixel value and then comparing it with the neighbouring pixels, edges on the region can be traced. To classify this, they use both fixed and adaptive feature of Support Vector Machine (SVM). There is no need for the detected edges to be closed in this edge based segmentation. There are various edge detectors that are used to segment the image. A layout of an object is given by the edges which are the discontinuities in the sense of intensity. All objects in the image are traced when the intensities are calculated
