As many of my fellow classmates and I discussed on our last day, this class has changed our lives in ways we did not expect. The knowledge I personally have gained from our readings taught me about how different cultures approach philanthropy and practice different methods of giving. This information was made more real by the personal experiences that I was able to hear from my classmates and from you. Hearing these stories allowed not only for a better understanding of viewpoints that are different than mine, but also for an understanding of the amount of diversity that exists among gender, race, ethnicity, or cultural groups. I was able to look through the lense of my own values to discover what aspects of philanthropy are most important to me, and how this impacts my treatment of others. All around I learned a great deal about how to be a better philanthropist, friend, and human in society, because I had the privilege of taking this class. …show more content…
The article “Minorities: Part of the New Face of Philanthropy” discusses the topic of minority’s alternate ways of giving, explaining that minority groups have always had philanthropy as an important tradition in their cultures, despite some statistics that show lower giving rates for minorities. One reason that this occurs, that I found very interesting, is that minority giving has began to take shape in a way that better fits the US model, so people have just now began to take account for the ways in which they’ve been doing philanthropy all
1.) In addition to excelling academically, Ron Brown Scholars feel a deep commitment to use the tremendous opportunities afforded them to give back to others. This is manifested in their dedication to personal involvement with the RBS Program and the hands-on community service work performed by each of the Scholars. A strong philosophy of the Ron Brown Scholar Program is that individual service on the grassroots level has the capability to affect great change on a global scale. With so many issues facing our communities today, what issue would you like to see addressed by our group and how would you leverage your potential position as a member of the RBS community to develop a solution?
After basically having an epiphany in my advisor’s office, she sent me straight to the Lilly School of Philanthropy to meet with Pamela Clark. As I walked through the doors of the school after meeting with Ms. Clark, it all made sense to me.
The life of a late 18th century worker or farmer would have been very hard. Schools were not a necessity for children and cheap labor provided little income to raise a family. The people that endured and overcame these hardships were truly incredible. The selected few who became billionaires were very slim. Trending beliefs like social Darwinism made it difficult to succeed in society where the gap between the rich and the poor was so large. To be fair, Carnegie had an idea called the Gospel of Wealth which encouraged rich, successful men like himself to share their wealth with the lower class by contributing to society. Carnegie sponsored and built many libraries around that nation to give opportunity to those that want education. Regardless
Since SLU is a Jesuit institution, service is a primary focus, so assisting others get in touch with their compassionate side is a fantastic way to get others to participate in acts of service. This focus on service will also connect me with individuals who share my selfless nature. Of course there are other factors that draw me to SLU as a university, but the focus on service is one of the main ones. I am a wonderful candidate for the Presidential Scholarship at SLU because of my selfless, compassionate nature and my yearning to help my fellow students discover their own desire to aid others, which parallels with SLU’s commitment to
First off, we should decide what a “minority group” is. In North America, Arabs or Muslims, African – Americans, and Indians or Sikhs and Hindus and even Asians are some of the more common minority groups you will come in contact with. Based on a study on ethnic minorities, it was found that “This study explored the impact of income status (low-income vs. non-low-income) on family functioning, social support, and quality of life in a community sample of 125 families. The sample identified themselves as 17% Black or African American, 7% Latino, 4% Asian, and 66% White.” (Mansfield, 2013) It seems as though since these minorities used to be so uncommon, that they are now the norm because of how much they have migrated, immigrated or even re-populated other countries than their own. These minority groups used to be so uncommon and misunderstood, that they have in a sense, been forced to be open and understand each other’s racial and cultural differences. When a...
It took me eighteen years to realize what an extraordinary influence my mother has been on my life. She' s the kind of person who has thoughtful discussions about which artist she would most want to have her portrait painted by (Sargent), the kind of mother who always has time for her four children, and the kind of community leader who has a seat on the board of every major project to assist Washington' s impoverished citizens. Growing up with such a strong role model, I developed many of her enthusiasms. I not only came to love the excitement of learning simply for the sake of knowing something new, but I also came to understand the idea of giving back to the community in exchange for a new sense of life, love, and spirit.
When I began this class, I had never had any experience or knowledge on non-profit organizations. After reading the chapters and doing the project for CHASI, I began to realize that non-profit could be my niche. I chose to pursue a degree in criminal justice, because of the many job possibilities, but I never would have imagined non-profit being one of those possible careers for myself. I was raised under the philosophy from both sides of my family, that if you give, you will get in return, I believe this so much and I have witnessed it personally throughout this semester. I have given my time and effort to raise money for people, who I don’t know and who are less fortunate than some, and although I may not receive money or items back in exchange, I get to feel a sense of pride, which is more than enough. So when I went to the nonprofit career website and looked through the job listing, there were many that I was interested in but only a couple that I could actually see myself doing.
Volunteering enables a person to develop new skills that he or she would otherwise not have been able to develop. Unlike most other organizations, a charitable organization is happy to give positions to passionate, though inexperienced, individuals who desire to help others and benefit the community. Therefore, an individual with little experience in a field of work can gain meaningful skills that he or she can use in the future. For example, while I volunteered at the hospital this summer, I learned about the daily work lives and professional duties of doctors and nurses. Had I not volunteered, I would not have learned about these things. I was always interested in the medical field, but volunteering at the hospital let me explore my interests and en...
I have learned a lot about Personal Finance from taking this class, but there are three important concepts that I found particularly interesting as well as vital to my everyday life. The 1st major concept that I learn about from this class was the steps of home buying. I had a very broad understanding of how this process occurred because of hearing about the struggles and successes my parents experienced during the purchase of our most recent home. I learned that in order to buy a home, you need to get your assets in order and get approved for a mortgage. However, I did not understand the specifics of how this process happened and what I need to do in order to make this process a success. The outline of this process provided on page 261
During the third century, Emperor Constantine made Christianity popular, however, his version was a mix of Christianity and paganism that became a State religion and the foundation for the Catholic church. During this time there were several Christian groups that were separate from this State religion, and suffered for it. One of these groups was called the Donatists.

The very first time I read the topic of the essay, it reminded me of a movie I watched when I was around 13. “When someone does you a big favour don’t pay it back, pay it forward” is what little Trevor says in the movie “Pay it forward”. Being at the age of 13 I took it as a lesson of life and it gave me additional incentives to help who the most needed me. Most of the times I received the satisfaction of seeing a smile in the face of someone else, and half of the times I was let down realizing that I was just used by someone else. But I decided not to care; I wanted to do something that would have changed that conservative community I lived in.
Why is generosity important? Being generous can make people feel great because they feel like they made someone happy. Generosity is one of the most important traits that my family taught me. Generosity is being nice and not expecting something in return. Doing good deeds with good intentions will lead to beneficial results. Throughout life, everyone develops a trait from their family or friends that usually sticks with the individual for the rest of his or her life.
Philanthropy, or the act of private and voluntary giving, has been a familiar term since it first entered the English language in the seventeenth century. Translated from the Latin term “philanthropia” or “love of mankind,” philanthropy permeates many social spheres and serves several social purposes including charity, humanitarianism, religious morality and even manipulation for social control.
Philanthropy is powerful because everyone can be affected by the love for mankind, this can change the world for better. Philanthropy is not the practice of self importance and putting yourself above others. Philanthropy and its power of changing the world is about donating to charity your time, belongings, or even sharing kind words or advice in an effort to better others. It is about giving to others less fortunate, and caring about other humans. Whether you know them or not, helping others and caring for the welfare of those less fortunate can change the world. One person can change the life of someone else's by one simple act of charity or kindness. Bill Gates is a wonderful example, due to his material advantages, he can give his belongings to others to help them, rather than keeping all his success to himself. Over his lifetime Mr. Gates donated $27
