There are several different cultures in the world today. Each culture has its own different traditions and values. One of the world’s most popular cultural differences has to deal with religion. Religion is defined as “an organized system of beliefs, ceremonies, and rules used to worship a god or a group of gods” (Meriam). One popular religion is Roman Catholicism. Being a catholic means different things to different people but it usually revolves around one central theme; doing the right thing according to God. While I am not Catholic, I can certainly understand some of the values and beliefs they have. I sat down with Mark, a man of Catholic faith and discussed his traditions and values. We discussed his beliefs and what his religion was …show more content…
First, Catholics believe in “The Holy Trinity”. The Holy Trinity is a combination of three things. First there is God, the father then Jesus, the son and lastly the Holy Spirit. To the Catholics, God is the being that made us. Jesus is God’s son, who suffered and was buried for the fulfillment of the scriptures. Lastly, The Holy Spirit is the spirit sent down by God to live inside of us. Any one of Catholic faith also goes to a church or a parish. Any follower who goes to a parish or church is called a parishioner. There are many rules to follow when it comes to being Roman Catholic as well. Anyone who is Roman Catholic must abide by the Ten Commandments, which is a list sent down by God for his followers. The list contains commandments that state how wrong things like stealing, gluttony and many more dishonest acts are. There are many other instructions …show more content…
She told me how her religion started. She told me why things happened the way they. Janet spoke about how Catholics value honesty, integrity and kindness. She led me to realize that people of Catholic faith do not simply pray away their sins but must go to confessionals (a small box located in the parish) to ask for forgiveness with the help of a priest. She expressed that if you follow those commandments, you can lead an honest life. She felt this way because people who follow them will not want to steal, lie or cheat in her opinion. Thus, creating a better environment and a more authentic way of life. Mark told me how he prays before each meal and bed every day. He also told me he attends church on Sunday and attends mass every day. By telling me these things, they let me into their culture and helped me learn all I wanted to know about
With the rise of the reformation in the 16th century, Roman Catholics had a difficult time defending their religion but they did so through different means. The protestant reformation's rise was a cause of the Babylonian Captivity of the 14th century, the Great Schism from 1377 to 1417, and the Conciliar Movement to reform. As a result, Catholic women began to criticize heresy, institutional changes condemned protestant thought, and catholicism remained strong through influential Baroque arts.
For this interview paper I wasn't sure who I was going to interview at first. I was thinking of all of the religious places of worship in my home town of Sheboygan, but I wanted to interview someone I knew. So I decided to interview my roommate. I've known him since sixth grade, and he is a Lutheran. I was raised a Catholic and I had a lot of friends who were Lutheran. When I was a kid I really didn't think any differently about it, but now for this paper I get to interview a friend and see what his religion is all about and what he thinks.
...conceived notions were proven inconsistent with the experience. Having the opportunity to compare the similarities and differences of these two churches was an eye-opening experience. It was surprising to see so many differences between the two when half of my congregation is made up of individuals that use to belong to the Catholic Church. Being able to better understand the Catholic faith and their taboos helps me better access the things that happen around my community.
After reviewing all the issues studied in this course, the one area where I feel most confident, and would therefore call the "easiest issue" is in the area of Catholic identity. Studying at Marymount has allowed me to deepen my understanding of Catholic identity, and that understanding conforms to the discussion of Catholic identity found in the Handbook of Research on Catholic Education (Hunt, Joseph & Nuzzi, 2004), where identity is included in the theology that makes Catholic schools Catholic (p.31). Simply put, Catholic identity emerges from the theology of Catholicism and the truths taught by the church. Moreover, in an age when Catholic school enrollment is on the decline, successful schools are those who have remained true to their
Religion is a very important factor to a variety of believers. People have the liberty to decide what they want to follow and believe. Conflicts have emerged in Christianity due to the abundant amount of sects that broke off from Christianity. Not having the significant amount of information on religions has led to insignificant remarks and rumors. Each sect has different values and perspectives. The Church of Latter Day Saints and The Roman Catholic Church have different beliefs that reveal different values.
Religion, in many forms, has had the most profound influence on human society throughout history. It’s been the basis for many human traditions, value systems, and conflict throughout the history of human civilization. Understanding religious traditions, relationships, and foundational beliefs enables humans to understand their differences and better prepare themselves to make decisions regarding religious interactions in the appropriate context. Religions are considered to be reliable and important in answering the most profound questions of human existence; where do we come from? What should we do while we are here? Since religion is so important so are the holy texts, because they put into words/ writing of guideline of what that religion is all about. In this essay I will attempt to explore and discuss a passage from Gospel of Luke 10:25-37 “The Good Samaritan” and “Surah Ar Rahman” from 55th Sura of the Qur'an and their relation to that particular religion.
What is Christianity and why has it been able to develop into a continuously growing and evolving religion?
Since its emergence during the Roman Empire, the Catholic Church has had a prevailing influence over the world. Its doctrines laid the base for modern standards of morality, and during the Dark Ages it acted as the brain and power behind many leaders. After the emergence of secular thought during the Renaissance the Church's power shifted into the background. In recent times, its influence has begun to shift back into the foreground. The Catholic Church is a religious body that is prominent in the Western world. The capital of the Catholic Church is located in Vatican City in Rome, where the body that represents the Catholic religion and its people is run from. The Catholic Church has always had an effect on politics, and during the Dark Ages its doctrines and beliefs were key to early leaders' decisions. It functioned as an icon to the people of what would come if they followed the laws, and an advisor to the leaders, helping them rule over their kingdoms. After secular thought appeared the Catholic Church's power fell to the wayside because secular thought placed importance on the individual and people began to live their life the way they wanted instead of how the Catholic Church told them to live it in order to get to Heaven. The Church retained its influence in new ways during this time by supporting what the people were interested in such as the sciences, art, and the return to classical thought. The Catholic Church is a very different institution now, rife with corruption and flaws, but still followed across the world. Many of its followers have fallen away however because they are frustrated by its corruption, or the dated doctrines that it applies to politics, specifically things like same sex marriage or contr...

The religions of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam are alike in many ways but they also share many differences. Judaism and Christianity use the bible in their holy scriptures, while Islam does not. Jesus Christ is a part of all three religions as Christianity and Islam developed from Judaism. Many believe that the three religions worship, pray to, and focus on the same god. They believe this as many of the prophets are they share much in common as they share many beliefs. However, the followers of the three religions pray differently and in different places. the religions believe that their god created the world and everything in the world. A pastor has a great responsibility to minister the Word of God and to be a shepherd to his people. The pastor must be committed to biblical truths when he engages the work of the ministry. Some of these truths include: The Bible is the infallible Word of God, his preaching must be from the Word of God, and he must do proper exegesis to get to the authorial intent and proclaim that to his congregation.
Our human nature, how the social-norms, and forces of culture and religion can bring people together for cooperative success or can divide people for persecution and suffering.
