“Love is magical, and it can last, if we remember our differences” (Gray 14). Gender communication differences are very complex, yet somewhat remarkable. Dr. John Gray explains that it is as if men and women come from different planets. Unfortunately, many times men and women forget that they are supposed to be different (10). In addition to the biological natural differences between males and females, society treats and values each gender very differently, all of which plays a big part in how they communicate (Papadopoulos 2). Dr. Gray states, “When you remember that men are from Mars and women are from Venus, everything can be explained” (10). If a man and woman do not take the time to understand, respect, and become aware of their differences, …show more content…
Therefore, they can become demanding, resentful, judgmental, and intolerant of each other (13). However, when men and women learn to respect each other’s differences, they can live in tranquility (Tannen, Talking 40). Men and women react and behave differently when expressing difficult feelings, dealing with stress, and evaluating their self-worth. One of the most common and frequent complaints spouses have against each other is the inability to listen, especially when expressing difficult feelings (Papadopoulos 15). As it happens, women tend to be much more indirect than men in the area of communication, which causes much frustration and lack of understanding (Tannen, Talking 12). According to authors Alyn and Phillips, to be an effective listener, it is imperative that one must not only listen to the words that are spoken, but also to the way in which the words are spoken. Additionally, one should notice whether or not the nonverbal actions match the spoken words of the speaker (163). Nevertheless, Dr. John Gray explains how it is imperative to realize that these major mistakes …show more content…
When it comes to feelings of stress, men tend to pull away in order to think about what is bothering them (Gray 11). Every problem is dealt with differently, based on the severity of the stress. If a man is stressed over something really challenging, it is likely that he will disengage himself and spend time alone, looking to find a solution on his own, while doing something active such as racecar driving (30). If a friend or spouse’s assistance is necessary to solve the problem, he will talk the issue over with that person; otherwise, he will not involve anyone else in his difficulty. Studies show how many times when a man is searching for a solution, he will temporarily lose his awareness of everything other than the problem, become increasingly distant, forgetful, unresponsive, and preoccupied in terms of his relationship. If one is having a conversation with a stressed man, it will seem as if only 5% of his mind is involved with the discussion. Additionally, when going through the stress, it is likely that all other problems and responsibilities will fade into the background (31). In contrast, women like to share their feelings about any and every situation and pour out their emotions and thoughts to a friend (Tannen, Talking 11). Gray notes that when a woman gets stressed, she will usually become increasingly overwhelmed and emotional. Thus, discussing and talking about her issue would calm her down (29). In
Deborah Tannen is the author of “Sex, Lies and Conversation: Why is it So Hard for Men and Women to Talk to Each Other”. Tannen is a linguist who researches the relationships between men and women. She has not only conducted research, but has information published in several books and essays about this topic. Her research includes talking with several of groups and collecting data on the behalf of their response. In her essay, “Sex, Lies and Conversation,”Tannen argues that complications arise in marriages and relationships because individuals are not able to communicate with members of the opposite sex.
A men biggest weakness is expressing their emotions. They are taught from an early age to be fearless and powerful. They are informed that 'Big Boys Don 't Cry ' and to 'Man Up '. Men start to connect feelings and emotions with their weakness. They come to believe that they have failed if they become affectionate and were to open their hearts. As a result, many men try to be the warrior who saves the people around them and always puts on a bold face. Men are typically the provider of their household and tend to play the male role. “All men are the same”, is the most common phrase we all hear a lot nowadays, but some of us fail to realize that they are not. Carver argues that men are successful in relationship when they are unafraid to express emotion.
“Men are from Mars; women are from Venus.” Many argue this phrase was first made popular in 1992, when John Gray titled his book, a guide to relationships by enhancing communication, with the phrase. Whether the phrase is credited to Gray or not, it does bring to light the great contrasts between men and women. Perhaps the greatest difference among genders, apart from anatomy, is the way in which they communicate. Men and women communicate differently through communication patterns, nonverbal cues, and emotional content.
For many years society has embraced the idea that the difference between men and women were biologically determined. Others see not only the physical but also the social, emotional and intellectual differences between males and females. Though through traditions, media, and press, we act accordingly to how others view us. Each individual has pressure placed upon them based on their genders. Our sex is determined by genetics while our gender is programmed by social customs. Gender roles by definition are the social norms that dictate what is socially appropriate male and female behavior. Some theories interpret that a woman is tender and a loving mother, while on the other hand men are aggressive and are the dominant one of the family. An individual gender role is modeled through socialization. Individuals learn the ways, traditions, norms, and rules of getting along with others. A person’s environment has a big influence on the roles deemed expectable for men and women.
How can men and women be different? Everyone knows that there are some significant differences between males and females, even if those difference are physical appearances only. Others see both physical and social differences, emotional and intellectual differences between male and female. Gender roles, by definition, are the social norms that dictate what is socially appropriate for male and female behavior. In earlier times, American culture showed that it was common for women 's job to be a homemaker contrary to the males’ breadwinner role.
Gender differences are influences on gender behavior in the way that one must fit through the assumptions and inevitable confusion to distinguish the reality of the assumption. Men and women are obviously different inherently, but not in what they can and cannot do. Men and women are different and have different roles because this is society presented them to the world. Women have the most difficulty getting through these complicated times. There should be equality among all men and women of all races and ethnicity. This is a never-ending issue. We as a society should always know and act on the importance of gender roles, gender equality, and challenges with education in developed and developing countries.
on October 11th i went on a hunt that would change my hunting experience. I walked to my stand with my dad and we saw some fresh tracks. we had some bait out and then we went to the stand the bait was gone we got up in the stand and got ready.we got up in the stand and brought the gun up and got settled in.
We sat and talked all day without seeing any. It came to almost dark and deer started funneling out onto the plot in front of us. They kept coming and garrett said get your gun ready. I put the gun up but the deer winded us and started walking back to the woods. I picked the biggest doe and aimed behind the shoulder and BOOM The gun slamming against my shoulder! The deer dropped and never moved. We sat and waited a few minutes, and thought we are going to have to hurry with gutting it before it is dark. We rushed down and made sure it was dead, I started by cutting the stomach open and cutting the guts loose from the body. Me and garrett lifted them out and tossed the deer on the back of the ATV. I called my mom to tell her she can leave the house to pick me up and that i got a deer. We hung it from the tractor bucket and took some
I can remember the time that I shot my first deer like it was yesterday. I have never really been a big deer hunter until this past season. My dad had left me at our farm all by myself and he was going to come later. I got in the woods around 3:00 to 3:30. I sat it the stand for about a while and it was getting cold. I was wishing that I had brought my 22 rifle because I saw about 6 squirrels. I did not think that I was going to see a deer but I was wrong. Before the deer came along one of the squirrels ran up my tree stand and I could have probably kicked it if I wanted. It was getting dark when I heard my dad shoot. I waited a little bit longer and then I saw three doe. I wanted to shoot a buck so I let them pass. Then I knew that I probably
We all have a certain way of communicating that seems evident and natural to us, so we can be shocked, frustrated, or even sadden when someone misinterprets us. Interacting with other people is part of our daily lives, yet men and women have different styles of communication and behavior. Some of the major differences between men and women are how they express emotion, affection or intimacy, and communication. Women tend to be more emotional and express more affection, whereas men are far less emotional and express less affection. Women regard intimacy as talking face-to-face; however, men regard intimacy as working or playing side-by-side. Women tend to ask more questions when communicating while men ask fewer or no questions at all. These
I couldn’t believe how it happened It was so exciting. It all started when me and my dad got all of our hunting stuff around and put in the truck. Then we headed to hunting property and when we get to hunting spot I get out of the truck nice and quietly and me and my dad get our stuff on then I get the gun out of the case and load the gun and then we quietly walk out to your blind when we get into the stand of course my dad sites in the chair and the chair makes a big “ POP” and I thought for sure that if there was any deer even close to us at all we just scared them.
Several weeks ago I observed a woman at the Mall. She and a young man sitting directly across from each other were engaged in what was apparently a mutual flirting. But the younger man seemed much more confident and cocky than did the woman. For one thing, he was more relaxed and calm. The woman, however, kept her arms folded over a bag that she was holding on to very tightly. The woman also had a strong tendency to look down more often than the man. Although her admiration for him was obvious, she seemed to be trying hard to conceal it. Often women seem to be more noticeably shy than men. Non-verbally, their “body language'; seems to communicate their feelings of great uncertainty and self-consciousness.
One late afternoon my dad asked me if I wanted to go hunting. And I was like yeah why not so we come to the house and got our hunting stuff ready for the morning. Then we woke up at five o'clock and went to my tower stand and all I saw was squirrels. Finally I heard some crackling and popping sounds of something it was an eight point buck. Then I tapped on my dad's shoulder and said look , I waited and I thought he is in drop zone so I shot and he ran about one hundred seventy five yards to a complete stop. Therefore we waited on another one but , that didn’t work so we went to my deer and he was still alive so I got my dad’s pistol and shot him because I didn’t want him to run off.
Historically, the roles of men and women have evolved overtime. For thousands of years, static gender roles were the accepted norm. In the 18th century “the idea that women and men naturally possess distinct characteristics” was a view that many people had (Emsley). Women were believed to be controlled by their emotions whereas men were thought of as
Gender roles and identity are constantly shifting throughout different societal generations. Men and woman both have notable similarities and differences in genders and they each contribute to their personalities and actions. In the past men have been viewed as a more dominant sex in society over women, both in careers, home life, and sexually, however, today women have bridged many of the gaps and society is accepting a more equal view of genders. The following examines the similarities and differences between men and woman by looking at biological characteristics, gender roles, and sexual responses.
