Beowulf: Differences between Text and Film
“I Am Beowulf” an infamous line from the movie Beowulf. The Movie Beowulf directed by Robert Zemeckis is an animated film which is an adaptation from the Anglo-Saxon poem Beowulf whose author is unknown. There are many differences between the film and Anglo-Saxon poem that include Beowulf’s characteristics, Grendel’s fight with Beowulf and how Grendel dies, Grendel’s mother and her fight with Beowulf, Hrothgar and his actions, Beowulf’s kingdom and the fight with the dragon. The Differences between Beowulf the poem and Beowulf the movie are very large.
Beowulf’s characteristics seen on screen are very different compared to Beowulf’s characteristics in the Anglo-Saxon poem. Beowulf in the film Beowulf gives no glory to god, but in Beowulf the Anglo-Saxon poem he always gives glory to god. Before fighting Grendel he says, “The father in his wisdom shall apportion the honors then, the All-holy Lord, to whichever side shall see him to life.”(L.685) After the fight with Grendel, Beowulf speaks to the people and says “He is forced to await now like a guilty criminal, a greater judgement where the lord in his splendor shall pass sentence upon him.” Unlike the poem,in Beowulf the movie he is very prideful. When Grendel is trying to flee from Hereot a chain gets stuck around his arm and is stuck between two doors Beowulf says, “ Your bloodletting days are finished, demon!... I am ripper, tearer, slasher, and gouger. I am the teeth in the darkness, the talons in the night. Mine is strength and lust and power! I AM BEOWULF!” In Beowulf the Anglo-Saxon poem, after the fight with Grendel’s mother he thanks god because without him he would not have been able to win the fight. According to Beowulf th...

...f that “ Thy sons shall pay for thy fathers sins.” Beowulf slays the dragon which is his son and dies in the process. According to Georgette Lewis-Brown, “He redeems himself in the end however as he kills the dragon, his son- the result of his affair with the demon, in a battle that also costs him his own life.”
There are very many differences between the Anglo-Saxon poem Beowulf and Beowulf the Movie directed by Robert Zemeckis. If one has read the poem they can notice fairly easily the differences. Beowulf the Anglo-Saxon poem may never be able to be perfected on screen like it is in the poem.

Beowulf And The Anglo Saxon Warrior Essay examples

- In modern literature, coming-of-age tales are usually reserved for angst-ridden teen protagonists who curse the cruel world and hopelessly try to "fit in" before finally having the epiphany that "fitting in" is meaningless. The Old English epic poem Beowulf tells of a man who transforms from a young warrior establishing his reputation to a wise king who embodies the ideals of Anglo-Saxon warrior culture. Beowulf has a central device which moves its title character through the stages of his life: his three major fights against Grendel, Grendel 's mother, and a dragon....   [tags: Beowulf, Grendel's mother, Beowulf, Grendel]
