1. What is the difference between undernutrition and malnutrition?
In our reading, the definition of undernutrition and malnutrition is; malnutrition is caused by deficiencies, excesses, or imbalances in energy, protein, and/or other nutrients, while undernutrition is caused by intake that is insufficient to meet dietary energy requirements continuously. The meaning of undernutrition is insufficient food intake which results in stunting, wasting, deficiencies in vitamins and minerals, low weight. Malnutrition is both overnutrition and undernutrition. Malnutrition is caused by undernutrition or unbalanced nutrition. Undernutrition can be caused by insufficient nourishment, poor absorption, or poor biological use of nutrients consumed (Treating

3. What was the epidemiology of malnutrition in Haiti in 2005-2006? In other words, who in Haiti was affected or diagnosed with malnutrition?
Haiti had the third-highest calorie deficit in the world (-460 calories per capita per day) in 2000 and average calories per day was 2108 kcal per day in 2003. One third of the income of a worker was spent on food in urban areas and over half the income of a worker was spent on food in rural areas (Treating Malnutrition in Haiti, 2011). Rural areas had the highest amount of people who considered themselves food insecure at 77% (Treating Malnutrition in Haiti, 2011). Beginning in 1990, 4.5 million people in Haiti were undernourished and by 2005, 5.3 million were undernourished.
Children have less nutritional reserves than adults and are more susceptible to malnutrition (Katona & Katona-Apte,

The wasted condition of children with marasmus caused by the body using its own tissues and muscles for energy and kwashiorkor appears to be a genetically susceptibility to faulty protein utilization mechanisms in food shortages (Brown, 2010. p. 33-5). The children with kwashiorkor may have edema and show effects of marasmus. Malnutrition can have lasting effects on development of the brain. If malnutrition is experienced by the fetus to two years old, these children can have permanent delays in mental development (p. 33-5). Psychological effects of malnutrition may be a lifelong problem (p.
Nutrition is a process that involves the breakdown of food and other substances in the mouth useful in the delivery of body energy. Practicing healthy diet can lead to avoidance of both the known and the unknown health issues. Poor diet is harmful to an individual’s health and cause diseases like kwashiorkor, scurvy, obesity and metabolic syndromes. Popkin (2011) said that “In the last 20–30 years, the world has reduced its water intake, shifted towards sugar-sweetened beverages, increased its proportion of food that is sweetened and ultra processed and reduced its intake of many health components of our diet, including legumes, fruits and vegetables" (p. 83). Different types of foods contain various nutrients that range from fats, carbohydrates, proteins, vitamins and water. Insufficient, imbalanced, or excessive consumption of nutrients by an organism leads to malnutrition. Today, the trend of diet and nutrition is changing at an shocking rate. Good choices of foods positively affect an individual’s health while poor diets have long-term negative effects. Healthy diet gives the body sufficient nutrients to perform physically, fight diseases and maintain wellness. Most of the foods, especially in the market today have heavy saturated fats, lot of carbohydrates, partially hydrogenated oils and highly processed foods.

World hunger is a very important epidemic because of the risks or implications it imposes on the rest of the world. Juveniles are the utmost apparent victims of under-nutrition. 2.6 million children die as a result of hunger-related causes each year. 66 million school-aged children go to classes hungry across the developing world, with 23 million in Africa alone. One in four of the world's youth are kept from growing due to malnutrition. In developing countries the proportion can rise to one in three. A strong maternal-infant bond provided through psychosocial stimulation is essential for positive child development. The formation of this bond at the beginning of life is an essential step that sets the stage for cognitive, emotional, and social development later in life. Feeding and other care practices provide opportunities for psychosocial stimulation and help to establish a positive attachment between caregiver and child.(WHO) Under-nutrition magnifies the effect of every disease, such as measles, diarrhea and malaria. Asia has the largest number of hungry people (over 500 million) however S...
...brain and malnutrition. Therefore, one’s diet is not only crucial for the physical well being but also their mental.
There are many different kinds of effects that come from not consuming the right amount of the nutrients everyday. Receiving the right amount is key especially for children ages zero to three years old. Some physical effects in early-aged children is the inability to fully develop in growth and their ability to fight infections is very weak. Other physical conditions found in children are chronic health issues such as, asthma and Cystic Fibrosis, also many children find themselves needing to be hospitalized. Mental effects are taken into account as well, because many children experience behavioral consequences and challenges: Children also suffer from anxiety and aggression issues. Young children are not only people affected from lack of nutrients, but adults experience both physical and mental problems too. Adults are not as affected by not getting the accurate amount of nutrients, these ages unfortunately do not get to live a...
The effects of nutrition can begin before birth, with the nutrition of the mother. Under nutrition can result in negative effects of the development of the brain that can become permanent and irreversible. One example is the lack of iron, which is a necessary part of the brain’s tissue. When iron deficiency is present nerve impulses tend to move slower. “Iron deficiency…is associated with behavior changes and delayed psychomotor development” (Nutrition and Cognitive Development, 2001), as well as decrease attention span, irritability, fatigue, and difficultly with concentration. “ Anemia is one of the most prevalent nutritional disorders in the world, affecting nearly one quarter of all low-income children in the United States”(Rosenberg,1998). Iron deficiently anemia effects many young children in our country and has been linked to a child’s ability to learn by influencing attention span and memory. Besides iron, there can be iodine deficiently as well that can occur during the early years of a child. Reduced cognition and achievement in school can be associated with iodine deficiency. Researchers have also proven a decrease in protein intake with in diets can have an effect on achievement scores. Overall, under nutrition can results in a decrease of activity, social interaction, curiosity and cognitive functioning. This is proof of how the prenatal period of a child is the most important. “Recent evidence indicates that 15 percent of very low birth weight children and nearly 5 percent of low birth weight children require special education, compared to 4.3 percent of children born at normal birth weight”(Children’s Nutrition and Learning, 1994). Infants that are b...

Since childhood I have seen commercials about kids in Africa who were dying of starvation. The commercials ended by asking the viewers to contribute spare money to help these children. These commercial prompted me think about how we could help these children and their mothers. I decided to research malnutrition in Sudan. Malnutrition is when people lack nutrients due to disorders of the digestive system or do not eat regular, well balanced meals. The next stage after malnutrition has worsen is starvation. I choose Sudan because of the genocide, Darfur, which has left the country in poverty. This paper looks at malnutrition among child-bearing woman and young girls, the evaluation process used to determine malnutrition and the criteria to separate
According to the UN’s Standing Committee on Nutrition, malnutrition “is the single largest contributor to disease in the world.” Malnutrition is the lack of nutritious food or not having enough to eat. Malnutrition can lead to stunted growth, impaired learning abilities, weak immune system, osteoporosis, muscle weakness, and many other problems based off of the nutrients the body is lacking. In pregnant mothers, it can also lead to stillbirth, miscarriage, and other complications. In the Dominican Republic, this is a large issue that affects numerous urban families. With 20% of the entire population living in extreme poverty and an increasing population, this issue is becoming more prominent with every passing day.
In Vietnam, malnutrition among children under five remains a public health priority. The most recent statistics show a slow but steady decline in malnutrition rates but it remains a burden in the country and may account for 24.6 per cent of under-fives are stunted, 14.1 per cent are underweight and 6.4 per cent are wasted (2015 NNS
Malnutrition is when patients or people are not getting enough nutrients from their diets. Malnutrition occurs in all ages. This paper will focus more on the older adults. Oral care and promoting good nutrition will also be discussed.
“Malnourished children are 20% less literate than those with a healthier diet, says UK charity Save the Children” (The Information Daily). When parents become victims of poverty it can have some very unpleasing long and short term effects to their children. Parents in poverty have a lot on their plate and buying the best quality food or affording enough food can be a tumultuous task. Quality nutrition is essential for the development of the brain. At a young age, poor nutrition or not enough nutrition can seriously hinder “the brain 's development, a child’s ability to learn and has a devastating impact on a child’s future”(The Information Daily). “Malnutrition in the early developmental stages of the brain, by restricting the children’s cognitive growth, can lower a child 's IQ has much has 20 points”(The Information Daily). Long term effects of malnutrition leave permanent damage to the brain, however, malnutrition has short term effects as well. Malnourishment can greatly compromise a child’s immune system, making them more susceptible to infectious diseases. “Low counts of zinc, iron and vitamin A are commonly associated with weakened immune function” (Orphan Nutrition). A deadly infection can have a huge impact on a poverty stricken family leading to less affordability. Malnutrition negatively affects a student throughout their educational
Malnutrition impacts the development of a fetus into a young child because it has a harmful effect on their cognitive development as the child becomes older. Malnutrition can be defined as lacking proper nutritional value and not eating enough food which is needed for a body to function properly. I believe malnutrition of a fetus, eventually born into a child, will indefinitely make a negative impact on a child’s life mainly due to not receiving the right nutrients and supplements needed to develop an optimally functioning brain and build a healthy structured body.
The second type of hunger is considered to be named as chronic or endemic hunger, because it is not felt by the majority of people. However, it can hold some subtle but significant changes in human body developing. For example, children may be underweight on the background of their coevals. The lack of the daily consumption of the vitamin A may cause problems with visio...
