In order to properly dissect the similarities and differences in coaching leaders who need to be more effective in an organizational context and those who desire to be more effective as individual self-leaders, we must first dive into the difference between ‘leadership’ and ‘management’. Leadership, defined as the process of influencing people and providing an environment to achieve individual, team, or organizational objectives, deals from a very personal, active and imaginative state. Leadership sees goals arise from desire while looking for fresh approaches to old problems. Management, or effectiveness within an organizational context, references the act or skill set of controlling and making decisions about a business, department, or team including the judicious use of means to accomplish an end. Management is viewed as more impersonal, passive and functional, wherein goals arise out of necessity. Whereas leadership is comfortable in solitary work yet encourages close relationships and is not averse to conflict, management prefers to work with others yet avoids close relationships and conflicts.
Though leadership and management are certainly not the same thing, they are also complimentary systems of action. While leadership helps to produce change through direction, alignment and motivation, management helps to control complexity through plan, organization and control. Stated simply, a ‘manager’ has the duty to plan, organize and coordinate, while a ‘leader’ has the duty to inspire and motivate.
In order to grow as an individual self-leader, those individuals would be best suited to focus on goal achievement within an organizational concept, while requiring goal compatibility with followers and focusing the attention downwa...

Leading, the function of the organizational world that includes motivating employees, directing others, selecting the most effective communication channels, and resolving conflicts, has become a must for managers and self-leaders alike. Learning and growth constitute the essential foundation for success of any organization. With people becoming the main resource for organizations, this learning and growth through employee training and cultural attitudes directly relate to both individual and corporate self-improvement. Employees and managers alike need to be in continuous learning mode, which starts with the innovative leadership qualities we have covered.
