1.0 Introduction
Twain was famous for his quotes and one of his saying mentioned on schooling which was “I never let my schooling interfere with my education", (Twain, No Date). However, what did Twain actually try to bring to everyone’s understanding in his saying? The definition for this quote cannot be simply defined through dictionaries as there is no specific definition for these words. We can, however understand this saying through our thoughts or experience, but when we do so, various explanations are developed, which indirectly leads to several never ending interpretation. Twain saying made it clear that there is a difference between the term schooling and education. Most of us tend to have the perception that the two words carry the same meaning. The misunderstanding of the difference between both the terms has lead to confusion in various aspects. The confusion has led to many people interfering schooling with education that school means schooling and therefore overlooking the education part.
Definitely this system is not going to be successful if schooling and education do not stand in handy on each other:

According to the speakers in the film, the purpose of education is to have a well-informed public that can be active members of society and participate in the democratic process. The main priority of many schools thoughtout the United States is to teach to the standard tests and to concentrate heavily on language arts and mathematics. Many of the teachers in this film believe that the focus should be more balanced and should have more focus on civic education and having a more informed student. These teachers believe starting as early as kindergarten and integrating civic education into every subject in school.

Throughout many years, education has played an important role in improving our minds and society. However, what many people tend to forget is that our education is not at the best it can be. Education is defined as receiving or giving systematic instruction, especially at a school or university. Many people today questions whether or not our education depends on the people teaching it or if it’s the student’s responsibility to want to learn. "To what extent do our schools serve the goals of a true education?" Education helps people learn new things, but it can be changed. Although education helps students learn and plan for the future, it can be improved to help benefit students ahead of time.
The schooling system has become an accepted part of young education in America. Although this system creates a standard system without much deviation, it still provides children with many opportunities to develop their passions. Many people feel constricted by this set education, however, this education is the key to success later in life. The skills learned not only academically, but how to behave in a scheduled environment, guide children to behave correctly throughout their lives. The schooling system uses ideas of conformity to make children value the idea of working together while still gaining an abundance of knowledge.

Education tends to always be at the forefront of the political discussion in America because it affects every citizen in some form or fashion, regardless of whether they have children in school. In discussing the role of education, one must ask what is the purpose of school – why do citizens of countries all over the world make an effort to be part of a literate society?
John Taylor Gatto, in his essay “Against School: How Public Education Cripples our Kids, and why”, argues that the contemporary purpose of education in public schools is to produce “harmless electorate,” “a servile labor force,” and “mindless consumers” (28). According to Gatto, he is blaming public schools by explain that the purpose of education is to shape students to certain expectations and habits without their interests. He argues that students “want to be doing something real” (Gatto 23). Also, He explains that they produce a manageable working class and “mindless consumers” (27-28). His point is that students want to learn something new that help them in their life better than actual books from school which don’t apply their interests and their experience (23). The reasons we educate our children have changed over time. However, some of the core values remain the same. One of the most important purposes of schooling is the transmission of a culture from one generation to the next. It is important to pass on our culture, values, and beliefs to our children so we continue to have a cohesive population. Schooling offers opportunity to our children by teaching them valuable skills that allow them to be self-sufficient and lead successful lives. Schooling also serves to decrease the social ills those without an education suffer from. A final purpose of education is to create people who are active in civic life.
The purpose of education has had very little change since the beginning of schooling, also education systems today in the United States have a purpose that provides little to no benefits to children. The purpose has evolved into preparing students to test, test, and test. Instead of providing students with opportunities to grow and find their passion(s), students are expected to learn a great load of material in a short time frame. With these methods and purposes, we are failing the children and ourselves. At some point, we must draw the line and realize this system is failing and it needs reconstruction.
Education is generally seen as a formal process of instruction, based on a theory of teaching, to impart formal knowledge to one or more students (Cogburn, n.d.). Henceforth, individuals seek to acquire some form of schooling from pre-school through secondary school while others may go on to tertiary to better him or her in some way. A definition of education according to the Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary is that education is “a process of teaching, training and learning, especially in schools or colleges, to improve knowledge and develop skills.” Where education in the common parlance has become a process of adding layers of one’s store of knowledge, the true aim of education is to call forth that which is essential to the individual (White, 2006). Furthermore, and according to Coombs and Ahmed 1974, education is a continuing process, spanning the years from earliest infancy through adulthood and necessarily involving a great variety of methods and sources. Education also involves inculcating in students distinct bits of knowledge; therefore education is an additive process (White, 2006). It adds to an individual as well as it adds to a country through the individuals who are and would have been or are being educated. According to a study conducted by Olaniyan and Okemakinde 2008, education creates improved citizens and helps to upgrade the general standard of living in a society. Furthermore, education plays a key role in the ability of a developing country to absorb modern technology and to develop the capacity for self-sustaining growth and development (Todaro and Smith, 2012).
Children around the world are being educated every day but some betters then others. What point in life does one have the incentive to be educated? For many they have the desire to be educated when they are young and in school. Others don’t desire to learn until they are no longer children. The entire purpose of the education system is to obtain knowledge and learn at higher levels. Then why do people not want to learn when they are in school in today’s society? This lack of interest of motivation or emotional support from the teachers, family and School system could be keeping kids from wanting to learn. In his essay “School vs. Education,” Russell Baker seems to believe that our system of education needs great improvement in the way we go about educating are students in today’s society. Schools and parents need more support educating students in each different stage of education throughout their life.
Education is a vital part of society. It serves the beneficial purpose of educating our children and getting them ready to be productive adults in today's society. But, the social institution of education is not without its problems. Continual efforts to modify and improve the system need to be made, if we are to reap the highest benefits that education has to offer to our children and our society as a whole.
The role of education can be explained using the two contrasting theories. Functionalism focuses on what compulsory education offers greater society; schools sort young people by their abilities, talents and capabilities, and students with these qualities will inarguably achieve more throughout their education than those without them, regardless of their socio-economic background (Holmes 2015). If one really looks at it, everyone would consider education has having different purposes. This denotes that the question of educational purpose is actually seen quite difficult to self. This is because the purpose or purposes of education is entirely dependent on personal beliefs and values (Biesta 40) therefore, there is a dichotomous depiction of views about education where different schools of thought come and intersect. In simple terms, this means that every person has a different aim or a different goal in life. They want to learn different things to satisfy what they consider the most important. A person who is passionate about music would like to learn the different instruments. Similarly, a person who is involved in science would want to seek tfor scientific knowledge.
