Just as a car needs gasoline to make it run, a body needs a healthy intake of food to develop properly. I am sure you or someone you know has been on a diet. The question though is why? Diets are when people restrict the amount of food they consume. There are many different diets out there that are meant for people to reach their weight loss goals. Many overweight or obese individuals use dieting in combination with physical exercise to lose weight. A quick weight loss program might sound good at the time, but it is now time to discover the truth behind dieting.
There is a commonly held view that dieting helps a person lose weight and have more energy. Dieting is considered to be healthy for anyone that starts a plan. In the sheets we passed around in class, I discovered that most of my peers thought this way also. One peer stated, “There are different types of diets for losing weight and getting healthy.” Advertising certain diets through commercials or ads where the person talking is a model, fitness enthusiast, and sometimes even a doctor gives a person the view that dieting is the way to reach weight loss. The thought on dieting seems to come to one conclusion, which is a restriction of food that allows a person to lose weight and become healthy.
People diet for many reasons. A lot of people feel pressured to lose weight and try different types of diets. Some are at an unhealthy weight and need to pay closer attention to their eating and exercise habits. Some play sports and want to be in top physical condition. Others may think they would look and feel better if they lost a few pounds. Some people may diet because they think they are supposed to look a certain way. This consequence is so vital because it not only affects your physical health, but also your emotional health, and that can lead to binge eating or anorexia. Losing weight is one of the top resolutions made every year, yet only 20 percent of people achieve successful weight-loss and maintenance (“Top Four Reasons” 2). That is an enormous 80 percent chance of failure. Who would ever want to put their time into a diet that will only cause them harm and failure?
In conclusion, one can see that dieting is not the answer to try and lose weight and live a healthy lifestyle. The only way a person is going to succeed is to eat a wide variety of enough food to meet the body 's needs. By accepting one’s body and making healthy choices, one can keep their weight under control and enjoy life at the same time.
