DHARMAPURI TEMPLE
LOCATION
Dharmapuri is a small town located in the Karimnagar district of Telangana, 60 km away from the district headquarters. It is mostly famous for Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy Temple which is situated on the southern banks of Godavari which flows through the town. The most interesting fact of Dharmapuri is that the Godavari river flows from north to south direction unlike west to east in all other places where it flows and hence the river is termed here as Dakshina Vahini. This town is also one of the nine Narasimha Kshetrams. Due to presence of many temples in the area, it is also known as ‘Teertharajamu’. The town was ruled by King Dharma Varma and thus the name of the town was named after him as Dharmapuri.
HISTORY OF THE TEMPLE
It is believed that the temple was built between 928-850 BC. This ancient temple has two versions of temple owing to the devastation it has witnessed over different period of time. The older one is called as the Pata Narasimha Swamy Temple and the newer one is known as the Kottha Narasimha Swamy Temple. In the 14th and 15th century, the next phase of anti-Hinduism started under Aurangzeb after the fall of Bahamanis and Qutub Shahis. Rustumdil Khan, the Subedar of Hyderabad converted this temple into a mosque with the help of the then Sultan of Delhi, Aurangzeb. However, in 1448 AD, a new temple near the mosque was reconstructed and hence this temple came to be called as Pata Narasimha Swamy Temple. In 1725 AD, an icon of Lord Narasimha was found in close vicinity of the Dharampuri village and hence, the temple was again rebuilt there.

I arrived at the Hsi Lai Temple in the city of Hacienda Heights around 3:00 p.m. on March 7, 2014. Although I am Chinese, I have never been to this temple before because my family does not practice Buddhism. This is my first time collecting data about the His Lai Temple. This method is referred to as participant-observation which is, “the anthropological method of collecting data by living with another people, learning their language, and understanding their culture” (Arenson and Miller-Thayer 521). The temple is built on a hill top. After driving up the long hill into the parking lot, I found that before entering the temple, I walked up many stairs. In the brochure For Guang Shan Hsi Lai Temple, it said that the name Hsi Lai stands for “coming to the West”. The temple, which was founded by Venerable Master Hsing Yun, signifies the dedication of Taiwan’s largest Buddhist organizations called the Fo Guang Shan. It took ten years to build the temple and was completed in 1988. This $30 million Temple on 15 acres of land was financed by donations from Buddhist devotees from around the worlds.

There was detail written about the craftwork of the temple. The stones were hand carved by more than 2000 craftsman over a period of 22 months. The lord Swaminarayan statue was in middle of the temple. The statue was so alive felt like Lord Swaminarayan is actually there in the temple. The ornaments and cloths of god were beautiful. BAPS or Bochasanwasi Akshar Purushottam Sanstha is a religious organization within the practices of hinduism. Formally established in the early twentieth century, BAPS preaches hindu spirituality along with cultural and social domains of the religion. The organization consists of both volunteers and followers. They are located all over the states. Last week I visited a BAPS Hindu Temple located near me, off Jefferson Avenue. The exterior of the temple was nothing special, as it resembled the structure of a modern day supermarket. However, inside the temple was magnificent. The first thing I noticed, other than the gigantic shoe shelves, was the golden lining hanging from the top of the walls. The lining was luminescent and the room was slightly dimmed which effectively created a spiritual setting. First thing I was asked to do when I entered the temple was remove
The Temple was very large and beautiful. My friend and I were both stunned by how gorgeously built the Mandir was. The buildings were big and stretched across several acres of the land. Next to the temple was another large building, which was used as a center for gatherings and entertainment purposes. The temple had many different entrances, the main one we noticed were the big steps ...
