The Devil Wears Prada by Lauren Weisberger is a Chick Literature meaning it a story about a woman for women or girls. It was written in 2003 and was made into a movie in 2006 by David Frankel. The movie, along with the book, is comedic and romantic. The movie is very similar to the book despite a few differences. The book was a huge hit because people can relate to this with the clothes, personalities, and experiences.
Andy, a Brown University graduate, has always had a dream of being a publisher so she moved the big city of New York in hopes of finding a publishing job there. She was offered a job as a second assistant to Miranda, a British editor-in-chief for a huge fashion magazine. Andy was not very fashionable and had little knowledge in the field, but she decided to take the job because this job could later get her into a publishing business. With this new job she is working long hours and her relationship with Alex, her boyfriend, becomes complicated. To make things worse; Miranda’s first assistant, Emily, gets mononucleosis and Andy has to travel to Paris with Miranda. While on this trip to Paris with Miranda, Andy is asked to do several hard tasks for her and she gets very stressed out. While still in Paris Andy receives a phone call stating that Lily, her best friend, is in a coma from wrecking her car while drunk driving. On the brighter side of the story, Miranda is pleased with Andy and tells her that her future is bright and that she will call a publishing company and refer Andy to them. At the fashion show Miranda gives Andy yet another impossible task from Miranda. The protagonist of the story is Ellen. Ellen is thirty-two years old, with limp blond hair and a plain face and whose eyes oozed sympathy. She is also a fifth-grade teacher who has recently left her job after having experienced the embarrassment of a public fight with her partner Roy in front of her colleagues. From the beginning of the story she is frightened, anxious, with head down and shoulders slumped, indicating she has a lot of pain and suffering kept inside her. Doctors have described her as anemic and depressive and she knows that that life she has led so far has contributed for that diagnosis. The protagonist is a dynamic character because although she starts as a person who keeps all her emotions to herself, in the end, she explodes and releases her frustration on Mr. Lercher, the passenger who tried to kill everyone on the airplane. Her change in attitude can be observed when the narrator describes, “ All she knew was that she’d had enough, enough of Roy and this big, drunken testosterone-addled bully and the miserable, crimpled life that awaited her at her mother’s, and she came up out of her seat as if she’d been launched…”
Even when examining Anna’s early relationship with Jeff, when she arranges for him to come up on weekends with Chuck. He protests saying, “Jesus, I don’t even know the guy…why didn’t you call me first” (Wallace, 315). Her insecurity about whether or not Jeff would come up on weekends without this convenience allowed for a lack of communication of feelings between Jeff and Anna. However, of more importance is Anna’s lack of communication with Peter. A large part of what makes Anna herself is her ability and love of creating stories. When her husband does not share this, Anna finds this challenging, and lets it become a barrier for communication. “His face set in the pained expression he wears for conversations like this – “What ifs” speculations. Surprisingly enough movies can have a large impact on us, that can really change who we are. The Blind Side, August Rush, and The Devil Wears Prada, are among the many different films that have had a significant impact me on how I live my life and see the world. Films have a way of influencing people into thinking and believing in ways they may have never thought in before.
For example Norman and Jesse are married way before Norman meets Neal (Jesse’s brother). In the movie Norman meets Neal while is he still courting Jesse. This brings forth another difference Norman doesn’t date Jesse in the book. When Jesse is first introduced, she is already married to Norman. A viewer of the movie who has read the book might also notice that when Norman is never offered a job to teach at Chicago University in the novel. Another big difference between the movie and the novel is the role that Norman’s mother plays, she is a very lively, dynamic character in the book, but in the film she is depicted to a flat character. Paul and Norman have equal fly-fishing skills, but in the movie Norman is just a mere amateur compared to Paul. Rev. Maclean expresses displeasure with Paul's decision to change the spelling of the family name in both version of the story. Someone who might have read the book may believe that the movie didn’t do the book justice when showing Paul’s struggle with his alcohol and gambling addictions. Norman offers to help Paul out with is personal struggles when he is driving Paul and his girlfriend home after a long night of drinking. The offer to help in the novel is done when Paul and Norman go fishing. Some other differences are Rev. In the novel, Lennie is said to be “a huge man” (2), but in the movie he isn’t very big, although he is bigger than George and some of the other characters.
