Recently, there has been an increased focus on Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs) as it becomes more prevalent in the United States. Since ASD is considered a developmental disability there is research from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring (ADDM) Network. The CDC-ADDM estimates that the prevalence rate for ASD (Autism & Asperger’s) identified across all racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic groups [Read article] is about 1 in 88 children. These numbers indicate that there is an increasing social problem growing within the schools since those first diagnosed with autism since the 1940s. The reason this is a challenge is that children with developmental disabilities require special approaches to benefit from an educational setting. In addition I would also encourage the act to give the parents and family stronger rights, because sometimes the parents are unable to understand or be there for the child as much as another family member candy. Also with all the money that has been spent recently and attorneys fees going to court for these services not being provided should be final back into the system for the department to use to provide the service instead of fighting the service.
