Throughout the leadership readings so far, I concluded that to be a leader you must be a good leader. In my mind, there was no such thing as bad leaders because if you were “bad” you would not be able to become a leader in the first place. However, Kellerman brings up the fact that to be a considered a leader the only two things you need is a purpose and following. She also sheds light on the fact that you can be a bad leader and a successful leader at the same time. (Kellerman, 2004). We have seen many examples of bad leaders throughout history such as Hitler, Stalin, wrongdoers in the Catholic Church, and Kenneth Lay from Enron. The study of how one becomes a bad leader and the commonalities of good and bad leaders is vital to the development of good leaders in society.
Good and bad leaders share numerous traits such as the ability to delegate, good communications, confidence, passion, creativity, and the ability to inspire. Some of the characteristics found in the bad leaders might comprise of coercion, dishonesty, and lack of ethical intelligence and understanding. (Kellerman, 2004) (Crosby, 2005) (Kirkpatrick & Locke, 2001). The main difference in good and bad leaders is the latter lacks ethical intelligence and efficiency across leaders and followers. As a society studying bad leaders, how and why they come to power, will not make the problem go away; it will only limit our ability to learn from and prevent it. As a society it is our responsibility to study and develop good leaders but to also study bad leadership so we can identify and prevent it before it starts changes lives for the worse. Weather the bad leader is on Wall Street, a local community member, or politician the effect they have on the people around them can be devastating.

Simon Klinek discusses about how as well as why respectable leaders are leaders the reasons behind why they do what they do and the reactions these leader’s actions cause to those surrounding them. The fact in which a person becomes a leader is a matter of choice, and a willingness to put another person before one’s self the idea of getting the fall so that another is able to triumph and succeed. Warren Bennis’ novel, On Becoming a Leader, is the book I was able to read. Bennis worked years on this novel constructing it off of one of his former creations. Finally, in Cambridge, Ma Bennis published his story by Perseus publishing. Throughout this book he centers around the search to understand exactly how leaders are made. Bennis uses a unique approach to portraying his opinion. This is not an ordinary “how to” book on becoming a leader. Nor is it an autobiography of one’s personal experience. Bennis was a teacher and student all his life, he has never run a country or even a company. Bennis is not directly reciting his own experiences as a leader. A leader is supposed to be an example of how all employees are expected to act and what they should be striving for. Leaders are not always to be trusted, and this is highlighted in the novel Animal Farm by George Orwell as the message of the text. In Animal Farm, leadership is represented through the actions and personalities of the various characters as a powerful, but easily corruptible force. The Leaders of Animal Farm start off with good intentions but as the story goes on it becomes obvious the leaders have grown power-hungry and have become the ‘superior’ animals, showing that equality does not exist. Propaganda and manipulation play a big part in the novel, stopping the animals from protesting or noticing that their leader was extremely greedy and corrupted. There are excellent leaders as well as awful ones, making it hard to know who to trust in, who to believe and what to do, after all leaders are hard to go against, but a corrupted leader is never a good thing.
In the world, there are two types of people; the ones who lead, and the ones who follow. Whether or not a person is a sheep or a wolf is determined by characteristics inherited from the outside world. The wolf personality takes control of the pack and leads it. While the sheep sits and waits for the wolf to create the path for them. These two qualities are defined by a series of characteristics.
