Most of us have a great capacity for learning and thinking but we do not actually utilize it to the best of our abilities. Developing our critical thinking skills requires a gradual process of plain hard work over a long period of time (Paul & Elder). There are many factors that shape how we think, such as habits, influences, and knowledge. Bad habits like stereotyping, being resistant to change and influences from others can affect how we critically think. But we must overcome these bad habits and change our way of how we think, how we process information and how we take that information and develop solutions to problems and issues. Many of us probably do not realize just how much we utilize critical thinking in our daily lives. I know before taking this course, I did not realize that when I thought out problems that I was actually using critical thinking skills to solve them. Whether it is big things such as changing jobs, choosing what courses you want to take in school or just purchasing a new vehicle, we all use critical thinking to think those things through. ...f” (Chan). We made a rash decision based on our irritation at the situation without rationally thinking the through the problem to find a better solution. So to our detriment, we ended up with a piece of junk for a vehicle that we actually paid too much for.
In the end, we learn that sometimes we have habits that hinder our ability to think an issue through clearly. By recognizing what our bad habits are that sabotage our ability to critically think through a situation, we can learn to change our way of thinking. Critical thinking is not something we have or do not have, it is something we can learn. Over time, we can develop our critical thinking skills and improve our ability to become better problem solvers. By learning to ask the right questions, we can acquire the knowledge needed to use critical thinking to examine a situation and discover the best solution.
