In the academic exercise given, I have chosen to discuss the topic Leadership and Communication, in which recommendations on how to develop effective interpersonal communication skills will be conferred. According to the Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English, the word ‘leadership’ is defined as the quality of being good at leading a group, organization, country, and etc. The word ‘Communication’ as explained by Donald Clark (1997), means the exchange and flow of information and ideas from one person to another, and in the context of leadership and communication, I would suggest that communication is one of the essential elements of leadership. Effective communication between a leader and his or her members occurs when the group members catches the exact information or idea that the leader intends to convey. Many a time, physical and psychological barriers in communication filters the original message and causes misinterpretation among the group members. However, there are several recommended ways on what a leader should do in order to improve communication in his or her organization.
First and foremost, by keeping the language simple, it reduces the risk of confusion and misinterpretation of words to people of diverse cultures, backgrounds, and personal past experiences. The use of jargons within individuals from a society of similar profession is apparently inevitable, as it provides an easy way for people within the same field to discuss complex issues in a straightforward manner. For example, the use of jargons such as ‘PROM’ which is short for ‘Programmable Read Only Memory’ among computer programmers is common, as they are considered as ‘speaking the same language’. In conclusion, I believe that my suggestions above are able to mould one into a better leader, in terms of both speaking and listening. A leader should also keep his or her language simple and understandable to all parties to avoid any misinterpretations. One must also acquire good communication skills in order to successfully lead a group in fulfilling their task. Besides, a leader should also take up the role of a good motivator, coach, and counselor in order to bring out the spirit and joy of working together as a team. Words of encouragement and praise should also never fail to slip from the lips of a leader, and of course, feedbacks from all will forever be a vital aspect to advance and develop in all perspectives. Hence, I would like to conclude that a good leader will never fail to bring out the best of his people.
Some leaders have natural capabilities but even they have to cultivate and develop their skills to achieve success. Individuals who do not have natural instincts for leadership communication can develop them if they have the energy and desire to do so. Developing these skills involve learning one’s self and capabilities. During this process a lot of information emerges and a lot of introspection is needed. While doing this self-evaluation areas such as image, dealing with the feelings of others, and various communication dynamics must be examined. This process can be time consuming and effective, it is worth the time and effort that is required in order to be successful. The process will reveal those areas that need improvement and areas where a person can excel. Once these areas are noted an improvement plan with goals can be created in order to work on becoming a successful and effective leader. It is a gradual process which if done seriously and efficiently could have outstanding results for the leader and his or her group.
Many definitions exist on what leadership is. Despite the many differences in definitions, they all describe the leader as someone who influences others. Leaders transform individuals around them allowing them to work to their full potential. In order for a leader to be successful they must be knowledgeable, self- confident, and effective communicators. These characteristics will create a positive workplace environment that results in an increase in productivity. Leadership is not defined by titles or salary. Leaders must acquire their skills and continue to improve on them through learning. Good leaders provide a vision and help motivate others to make that vision happen. The leader must be effective and successful in creating a strong institution.
The role of a leader is often inaccurately defined as an individual who is in a position to give orders. However, there are enormous differences in the attributes of an outstanding leader, and one of mediocrity. An outstanding leader, above all else, is a role model for their peers. In doing so, a leader of the highest caliber is trustworthy in both their peer’s trust for the leader as well as the leader’s trust of their peers. A leader must also display exceptional skill in communication which transcends speaking and, more importantly, includes listening and consideration to the ideas presented to them. Furthermore, a leader must be supportive of and willing to help their peers build their own strengths. The attributes listed above represent only a small subset of what makes an outstanding leader. Leaders take responsibility for their actions, maintain their integrity by doing the right things and develop personable and commutative vision for their organizations. Leaders instill a sense of discipline; enforce organizational standards of the organization and do not turn a blind eye or overlook problems.

Throughout my life I have encountered the chance to experience position of being a leader. Being part of groups in university for class presentations, being the organizing secretary of my campus fellowship, being a youth leader in my church and the church admin, also being part of a family. Leaders are charismatic, inspirational and trust worthy. I have gained some important qualities of being a good leader through these experiences. Most of the valuable leadership’s characteristics that I obtained and strengthened are: learn to become a better leader every day, how to be a team player, to be a better listener, to be an effective communicator, to have more patience, not afraid of constructive criticism, to be outspoken, and to be a problem solver. Even though I have gained a lot, I still have more things to learn to become a better leader such as being more assertive, being more disciplined, becoming a better public speaker, and learn how to be realistic and not too optimistic. It is the leader that helps prioritize activities and direct people’s thought process in the right direction. They are the ones who have the ability to bring the group together as a whole.
