Throughout Ernest Hemingway's novel The Sun Also Rises, the reader can see the aimlessness of the characters involved. This is supposed to represent the erratic and lost disposition of what was known as the “Lost Generation”. The “Lost Generation” is known as the generation of individuals who came of age during World War I. Throughout the novel many relationships take place with a certain female named Lady Brett Ashley and many male characters. Many problems arise because of this which clearly shows the destructiveness of sex in this novel. Sex has a very deep effect on the decisions of the men in this novel which leads to the destruction of relationships.
The main relationship that takes place in this novel is between Brett and a man by the name of Jake Barnes. Jake is a wounded soldier from World War I. His injury has caused him to be impotent and is the potential reason for all of his relationship issues with Brett. They are deeply in love with each other but cannot bond on an intimate level due to Jake's impotence. Because of this Jake knows that Brett will never commit to him due to her want of sex. Jake's impotence is a barrier between him and the love of his life. This situation causes Jake to increase his drinking habits and question his own masculinity as he drinks his pain away. Because of Jake's impotence, Brett also throws herself into meaningless affairs with other men. Even though she will not commit to Jake, she will not give up her relationship with him either. However, she often brings other men around Jake and tells him of her affairs and before Jake can really say anything about it or how he feels about it, she will digress from the topic. Her carefree attitude about sex puzzles the male character and causes heartbreak for all of them in one way or another. For Jake, his impotence and her want of sex will always keep them from consummating their relationship. For Cohn what was meaningless sex to her has transformed to feelings that will never be mutual. And for Mike, he will never fully be happy with his wife due to the spontaneous and constant affairs she has with random men. In the end sex has indeed led to the destruction of relationships throughout the novel.

Brett is not necessarily thinking about these men, instead she is punishing herself for all that she has put men through by being involved with people who can not match up with her sexually. Likewise, Hemingway shines light on the relationships that Brett has destroyed between men to punish herself. Then, also when Jake Barnes finds out that he cannot enjoy a sensual relationship with the love of his life, Lady Brett Ashley, whom is also a sex addict, due to the post-war wounds he suffered to his genital area. Jake Barnes also discovers that Lady Brett Ashley marries Pedro Romero, the most symbolic character for the sake of beauty, but towards the end of the novel Lady Brett Ashley divorces Pedro and considers the fact that she actually wanted to be with Jake Barnes all along. Though, Jake Barnes has already moved on from Lady Brett Ashley and tries to look forward in starting a new life and possibly a new relationship with a new companion. Readers of the novel never know what happens to Lady Brett Ashley or Jake Barnes, imaging where they are now is certainly a piece of the puzzle that is entertaining to complete. This quote sets up the idea of loss Jake Barnes suffered in the war. His castration led him to lose not only his manhood but also his chance with Lady Brett Ashley. Though Jake tries to play down his infatuation and love of Brett, it sometimes shows. However, the reader understand that Jake does truly love Brett. Jake also understands that since Brett is a women of aficion and passion, Jake’s loss also means the ultimate loss of Brett. It is no secret to the characters and the reader than Brett could not go without intimacy, and since Jake will never ever to fully supply that intimacy, their relationship will never be complete. Even though Jake and Brett might be right for each other, Brett will in the end return to Micheal.
At the beginning of the novel, Jake is obsessed with Brett and thinks that they will end up together even though she is very unstable in relationships. By the end of the novel, Jake has accepted that he and Brett will never be together, reaching a sort of peacefulness because of his more realistic ideas about their relationship. The promiscuity of the only two women in the play, Gertrude and Ophelia, detracts from their power and integrity, and allows Hamlet a certain amount of control over them. Gertrude’s sexual lifestyle is often mentioned by her son, Hamlet, and Hamlet uses his knowledge of Gertrude’s sexuality as a means to criticize her. Ophelia’s sexuality initially appears to be controlled by Laertes and Polonius, and Hamlet takes advantage of the naive image that she is required to keep. However, in her later madness, Ophelia taints this image by revealing that her innocence is feigned. By exposing the sexual natures of both Gertrude and Ophelia, Hamlet strips these women of any influence they may have had, and damages their once-honourable names.
The American Dream and the decay of American values has been one of the most popular topics in American fiction in the 20th century. F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby and Ernest Hemingway’s The Sun Also Rises create a full picture of American failure and pursue its ideals after the end of World War I by portraying the main characters as outsiders and describing the transportation in a symbolic way. Putting the aimless journeys for material life foreground, Fitzgerald and Hemingway skillfully link West and men and associate East to not only money but women. As American modernists, Hemingway utilizes his simple and dialog-oriented writing to appeal to readers and Fitzgerald ambiguously portrays Gatsby through a narrator, Nick, to cynically describe American virtue and corruption, which substantially contribute to modernism in literature.

Hemingway’s characters exemplify the effects of combat because World War I had a negative impact on them; the veterans lead meaningless lives filled with masculine uncertainty. Jake and his friends (all veterans) wander aimlessly throughout the entire novel. Their only goal seems to be finding an exciting restaurant or club where they will spend their time. Every night consists of drinking and dancing, which serves as a distraction from their very empty lives. The alcohol helps the characters escape from their memories from the war, but in the end, it just causes more commotion and even evokes anger in the characters. Their years at war not only made their lives unfulfilling but also caused the men to have anxiety about their masculinity, especially the narrator Jake, who “gave more than his life” in the war (Hemingway). Jake feels that the war took away his manhood because he is unable to sleep with Brett as a result of an injury. Although he wants to have a relationship with Brett, and spends most of his time trying to pursue her, she rejects him because he cannot have a physical relationship with her. At several points in the novel, Brett and Jake imagine what their lives could have been like together, had he not been injured during the war. Jake Barnes, as the narrator and supposed hero of the novel, fell in love with Brett some years ago and is still powerfully and uncontrollably in love with her. However, Jake is unfortunately a casualty of the war, having been emasculated in a freak accident. Still adjusting to his impotence at the beginning of the novel, Jake has lost all power and desire to have sex. Because of this, Jake and Brett cannot be lovers and all attempts at a relationship that is sexually fulfilling are simply futile. Brett is a passionate, lustful woman who is driven by the most intimate and loving act two may share, something that Jake just cannot provide her with. Jake's emasculation only puts the two in a grandly ironic situation. Brett is an extremely passionate woman but is denied the first man she feels true love and admiration for.
