The statistics shown by The Environmental Protection agency claim that buildings in the United States contribute about 40 % of the nation’s total carbon dioxide emissions (2). Green building is the process of construction that is done in a way to conserve natural resources and reduce the harmful impact that construction has on the environment. Green building includes environmentally sound design, construction, maintenance, renovation, and demolition. Greenhouse emission is the release of gases, like methane gas and carbon dioxide, in the atmosphere. Construction waste management is the concept of reducing, reusing, recycling, and design in a way that uses the least amount of resources as possible and minimizing the amount of waste.Environmentally friendly construction will have a positive impact on the environment by reducing pollution, reducing waste, conserving energy, conserving water, and using eco-friendly building materials.

This essay will focus on what BREEAM is, how it can help individuals and businesses realise the benefits and value of designing and operating a sustainable building. It’s a set of standards and certification schemes that measures sustainable value in the built environment. BREEAM stands for Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Methodology and it’s a global sustainability standard and rating system for buildings. BREEAM is used as a ‘label’ on over 200000 buildings and is currently being applied to clients in over 50 different countries on 40000 projects. The BREEAM mark provides clients and the market with a clear statement about the quality of the building and its environmental performance.
Since 1970, there has been a high alert for environmental problems. Some people may think that automobiles are the main cause of the non-recyclable resource. Even building and homes use half of the non-recyclable resource. Sustainability architecture is not the newest concept. The sustainable architecture is rarely ever used, reason behind is the both the architect and the client. It’s the job of architect to involve the client in the idea of the sustainable architecture. Due to the lack of solid resources most architects are unable to create or design a new sustainable architecture for a client. Even though options are given to the client about the sustainable architecture, however the client turns down the offer because they may not want to the pay the additional costs to construct. At some point the client has to be educated about design issues “sleek doesn’t mean better” and “a glass wall is not better than a concrete wall”. Time will come when people will have to be concerned about the internal architecture than the exterior architecture. Architects must stop withdrawing information from the catalogue and use their own design ability to reshape the way architecture runs. Sustainability architecture not only is preferable for the environment but it also gives the opportunity for the architect to really push the design beyond its limit. It was tremendous for Malaysia to have the Green Building Index as architects have been using foreign benchmarking tools over the years, and yet lacked a single green-branded building. For continuity and consistency, it is necessary that every discipline in the building industry to take initiatives towards designing and buid buildings to comply with the Green Building Index.
The main argument of this text is that understanding the historical context, how the city runs, and how the city has evolved, is important when designing sustainable and “environmentally friendly” buildings. The following 3 related ideas support this argument:
All in all, green building is gaining significant momentum as the new major trend in the construction industry. The payoff in employee health, community benefits, energy efficiency, construction process efficiency, and efficient use of waste is worth the significant up-front cost. This trend will proliferate, and green building will likely become an industry norm. According to the US Green Building Council, “Within the next two years, more than half of all commercial and institutional construction will have a decided tint of green.”
Sustainable design seeks to reduce negative impacts on the environment, the health and comfort of building occupants, thereby improving building performance. The basic objects of sustainability are to reduce consumption of non-renewable resources, minimal waste, and create healthy, productive environments (“Sustainable Design”). Focusing primarily on the sustainable design principles, there are five, including: low-impact materials, energy efficiency, quality and durability, design for reuse and recycling, and renewability. As sustainability appears to become the necessary trend in architecture, the question concerning the cost versus outcome of “going green” really an investment or a waste of time and money comes to mind. With our research provided below, we believe the expenses may truly be with the investment in the end.
