The design process
Design may be defined as the methodical approach to the solution of a problem. Fundamentally, the purpose of good engineering design is to create an end product which will not only function efficiently, but will also be a commercial success.
Except in the simplest of cases, the design process is a very complicated procedure requiring the services of a number of highly trained personnel. The main steps in designing a product may follow the pattern illustrated below.
Demand
Before anything can be sold there must be someone who is prepared to buy it. A satisfied customer is one of the best salesmen a firm can have. It is therefore necessary to establish and maintain the confidence of the consumer by marketing a good and reliable, product at a reasonable price.
It is important to have a clear understanding of who the buyer is likely to be. If, for instance, the item is for use in the home rather than in the factory, then, generally speaking, it will not need to be so robust, but will require a more attractive finish.
Design draughtsmen are primarily concerned with improving or adapting existing products to meet the consumer’s changing needs. Often, a firm will be asked by its customers to make a machine, which is larger or faster than those currently being manufactured.
Competition encourages a manufacturer to improve his products continually, and to offer a good service. In fact, competitive equipment constitutes one of the greatest external influences, which affect the cost, function, and appearance of a new design to a considerable extent. From the customer’s point of view, a new product must offer deci...

... commence. This is accomplished by subdividing the layouts into logical units for assembly, followed by further subdivision into detailed instructions on the manufacture of each individual item. Throughout this phase, the draughtsman is guided by past experience, relevant standards, codes of practice, and specifications.
Models
When investigating the relative positions of the major units in his layout, he may find it helpful to use models of the design, especially where plant layout or complicated mechanisms are concerned. If exact scale replicas are not essential, then special kits, which are available from model manufacturers, may be employed. As he may have to seek the advice of experts not familiar with draughting procedure, it may be easier for them to view and criticize his ideas in model form rather than have to wade through piles of layout drawings

Focus shall be on utilizing pre-production tools while developing the prototypes. Actual material, wherever possible, shall be used in the development of prototypes rather than having substituted parts. Make the prototypes as closer as possible to actual outputs.
There are many obstacles to coming up with a good design for engineers. Taking an ethical approach, one should be able to assume that the design they asked for was given due diligence and put together by a team of professional engineers who live by the Code of Ethics for their professional organization.
After completion of this step the architects use the surveying drawing to develop a working drawing for the building. In these drawing you will see triangles, rectangles, squares, arches and other geometry shapes and forms to create their design. The architects through our history have used these shapes to create famous structures all over the world. If you go back to Roman historical sites you will see such examples like the great Coliseum. A great example can be seen is the famous Egyptian pyramid. Some other famous structures are the Eiffel Tower which is in Italy, and Chrysler building in New York. If you look around your neighborhood houses, you will see these shapes.
A good design begins with a creation or plan for the making of an object or service. It is a strategic approach towards a person’s (usually a client or target audience) required unique expectations. A design generally defines the specifications and parameters in achieving its main objectives. Often there are no key attributes as to what would make a design successful and interesting. Products and peoples needs and wants or taste often change and revolve around time. This brings a definite change in the market and its emerging’s trends. This cycle of evolution will always exist, but finally it is the factor of emotional response with the customer that will determine whether a product is successful or not. Whether the design is an object or it is a concept, the design that we see is an accumulation of various concepts and decisions that have been brought together from a variety of disciplines. In order for a consumer to view the design as something that is good it takes a unique combination of aesthetics, quality and ergonomics to make a design successful. Often we recognize a bad design at its first glance and a bad design often forces one to take in many confusing and conflicted content. So what makes our design/ product fail?
In the past decades, there has been a heated debate concerning whether design aesthetic or functionality should be the core of industrial design. Some believe design should be purely aesthetic. while others believe design should be appealing and functional. An aesthetic design should be visually appealing. On the other hand, a functional design focuses towards to the practicability of the design. However as a designer, I strongly believe a well executed design should be functional while maintaining a high level of visual aesthetic.
Design is an expression of purpose, which could be later judged as art. Design is not a craft for industrial purposes, though it might be a solution to industrial problems. Its boundaries are defined by the boundaries of the problems which is addressing. Design does not concerns itself with only one part of the environment and it is not a method of general expression, it is a method of action. Design is often a creation of a group, because designers must always admit the influence of those who have gone before.
Designers can have very influential impacts on people in the design field or not. Some may not know it or understand it, which makes design more successful in the real world. The profession of a designer can be hectic or turbulent one. They want to know what’s going on in the world all the times but each designer sees it differently, which helps design evolve. Designers know how to ask the right questions and go above and beyond to come up with new questions and new ways of look at things. In the end, this is what is essential in developing new design in society.

The elements of design were created by Arthur Wesley Dow to help people see, describe, and create visual qualities in a systematic way. It consists of 7 elements: line, shape, form, colour, value, texture and space.
Like all engineers, architectural engineers apply the theories and principles of science and mathematics to research and develop economical solutions to technical problems. Their work is the link between scientific discoveries and commercial applications. Engineers design products, machinery to build those products, factories in which those products are made, and the systems that ensure the quality of the product and efficiency of the workforce and manufacturing process. Engineers design, plan, and supervise the construction of buildings, highways, and transit systems. They develop new materials that both improve the performance of products and help implement advances in technology. Engineering knowledge is applied to improving many things, including the quality of health care, the safety of food products, and the efficient operation of financial systems.
Client(s) may be in the first stage of our design thinking sequences (Archer, 1984, p. 67), and then the designer job is to explore what is the problem, what do we want, what do they need: to produce a design to meet the requirements. The initial design problem presented to the designer may be poorly and incompletely described (McDonnell, 1997, p. 45...

For the past few years, design thinking has made its breakthrough on education, business, and design fields. Design thinking is basically a new interactive process of thinking, or problem-solving method for the resolution of problems. Which differs from traditional design approaches in specific ways. It involves more creative and user-centered design approach.
The use of the computer has had a positive impact on manufacturing engineering in many ways. Engineering is a term applied to the profession in which a knowledge of the mathematical and natural sciences, gained by study, experience and practice, is applied to the efficient use of the materials and forces of nature. The term engineer denotes a person who has received professional training in pure and applied sciences.
