Within the old design, a learning module was split into multiple sections (or slides) and every section was connected together by a system of interactive buttons, including “Next”, “Previous”, “First,” and “End.” If the module had simulations to help students visualize complex concept such as the general planar motion or instantaneous center of zero velocity, the simulations were designed to run at a fixed speed once students press the “Run” button.
I applied several scaffolding strategies in the new design of learning modules and the following are two typical examples of the changes I made. First, whenever the learning modules introduced a concept, regardless the concept was old or new, I added the “Hint” button next to the concept linking the present concept to a more depth explanation or to the prior related knowledge. The benefit of these buttons was to help students, especially low performing ones, a chance to review their prior knowledge and connect to the current learning modules. Next, I rewrote the assignment to be more culturally neutral. In the past, the assignment was unclear or assumes knowledge specific to the United States. American students may have "filled-in" the blanks, while the international student does not have the cultural tools to do so.
In conclusion, the changes I made in the assignment included the use of both collaborative and individualized learning activities and the use of cultural neutral language. The student 's performance improved when the assignment accommodates his/ her learning styles. From this situation, I learned more about the culturally, racially, and ethnically diverse students as well as strategies to help them success academically.
