Throughout society the problems of war, hunger, and sexism are spoken out against frequently. However, there are problems that society as a whole faces that needs more attention from the general population. The problem of depression has become more prevalent among society in the last 50 years. Depression is a societal ill that countless authors and poets have focused on throughout their literary pieces. Depression is captured especially by poets who use their poems as a protest against the problem which is depression. Poets and authors use selective diction and symbolism to focus on the themes surrounding depression. Throughout poetry diction plays a vital role in describing the topic the poet is speaking about. This is illustrated in particular …show more content…
The night is full of stars and she is not with me.
That 's all. Far away, someone sings. Far away.
My soul is lost without her. (11-18)
Pablo Neruda 's usage of diction is useful for readers to infer what is causing the depression. For example, Neruda uses phrases such as, “Ive lost her,” “my love couldn 't keep her,” and “she is not with me”. The diction and phrases the poet uses infers that the depression is a result of the lack of love and the heartbreak the speaker feels. Pablo Neruda gives readers an insight of what is causing the depression, but other poets highlight what the depression feels like with their usage of diction. In Edgar Allen Poe’s “The Raven” diction is a powerful tool. This is demonstrated when the speaker states: Darkness there, and nothing more.
Deep into that darkness peering, long I stood there wondering, fearing, Doubting, dreaming dreams no mortals ever dared to dream before;
But the silence was unbroken, and the stillness gave no token, .(24-29)
Poe’s selective usage of diction gives readers the ability to conclude the speakers tone and feelings. For example, the use of words such as, “darkness,” “silence,” and “stillness” gives readers an insight of the speakers mindset. Poets use selective diction for readers to have a more personal insight of the emotion surrounding the

The tone in literature is used to describe the speakers attitude and feelings towards the theme written about. Readers may understand the tone of the speaker in just a line or two, this makes it one of the most essential tools in poetry. A clear example of tone is displayed in “The Raven” when the speaker states, “ Darkness there, and nothing more. Deep into that darkness peering, long I stood there wondering, fearing,” (24-27). The speaker is displaying the tone of helplessness and fear for the reader to understand the mindset which the poet has when writing regarding the theme. The tone highlights the societal ill that the poet is focused on. When analyzing poems regarding depression the recurring tone seems to be that of darkness and heartbreak that is surrounding the speaker. This is further displayed in “The Saddest Poem” when the speaker
The actor Keanu Reeves once commented, “Grief changes shape, but it never ends.” Perhaps, nowhere else is this idea of never-ending grief more prevalent than in dark romanticist Edgar Allan Poe’s poem “The Raven.” The popular eighteenth century poem follows the despondent narrator’s encounter with the Raven, the ominous bird later forces him to realize his never-ending isolation and sorrow due to the loss of his love, Lenore. In his poem, through the use of allusions and the literary devices of repetition and comparison in stanza 17, Poe explores the perpetual effects of loss.
Edgar Allan Poe chooses words with melancholy connotations to share the grief of the speaker. One such example is the “stricken eagle”. Eagles are associated with courage and nobility so for an eagle to fell so distressed it refuses to fly, something truly terrible must have occurred. Not only that, but even the earth felt depressed with a now “solemn sea” and “overcast” sky. The sea is often depicted as rough and wavy, as quick to change as Poseidon’s emotions, so the death of the speaker’s lover must have affected his emotions greatly for the sea to lay still. The cloudy sky is often used as symbol of sadness but rain
Depression has a major effect on a person's life. The accumulation of hidden emotions can cause difficulty in life. The consequences could be irrational thinking, suffering in ceased emotion or lead to a total disaster. In “Horses of the Night” by Margaret Laurence and “ Paul’s Case” by Willa Cather, both authors introduce the concept of depression. Although both selections offer interesting differences, it is the similarities that are significant.
In,”The Raven”, Poe utilizes diction, syntax, and rhymes to convey his theme of depression towards his lost love, Lenore. The raven flew into Poe’s home uninvited and stayed perched on his chamber door. In the story, the raven symbolizes the undying grief he has for Lenore.
For poets, it is essential that they write about what they know and what they feel, as the substance of what they are revealing will enhance their work and ultimately attract audiences. Edgar Allan Poe is one poet whose personal endeavours can be extracted from his poems. His works such as The Raven, Annabel-Lee and Ulalume are just a few of his most celebrated poems that reflect diverse aspects of Poe’s own life. Poe’s reoccurring themes of death in conjunction with love, the subconsciousness of self and ambiguity attracted audiences to become entranced in his work (Spark Notes, 2014). Adjacent to these intriguing themes is how Poe’s personal life was inexplicitly perceived in his poems, in particular The Raven.
Image a family. Now imagine the parents divorcing and never see the father again. Then imagine the mother dying and leaving three kids behind. All of which get taken in by someone. The two year old is given to a family, with a loving mother and caring father. Edgar Alan Poe did not have to imagine this, this was his childhood. Poe’s difficult youth was a heavy contributor to his perspective that pain is beautiful. Poe illustrates many things in “The Raven”, one of his most well-known pieces. “The Raven” is about a depressed man who lost his lover Lenore. The speaker states “’Tis the wind and nothing more!” (Line 36) in his delusional state to help himself cope with his loss. In “The Raven” Poe uses irony and complex diction. This helps Poe create his theme of the human tendency to lie to one self to feel better.
Edgar Allan Poe's deplorable life was filled with unfortunate calamity, endless tragedies, and pathetic misery, which inevitably led to his pessimistic view on life and obsession with death. His personal mind frame is automatically conveyed in his essays, which for him was a primary form of expression. Thus, a strong emphasis on somber despondency has proven to be a thematic element of his literary career.
"Why Are Your Poem 's So Dark?" written by Linda Pastan, answers the question of why poet 's always seem to write about the darkness of the world. Pastan 's purpose is to stand up for the poets who are criticized for writing dark poems. She wants to let people know that poets write about the reality of the world, with all the injustices that taken place in the world. The world is a dark place, so choose poets write about what they see in the world.
In Poe’s own life no durg could ever fully numb him to the pain of all his loses. His only true solace from his despair was in literature and his writings. Poe believed that visual art allowed the spirit to transcend the plane of reality to which it was stuck. In the Raven the narrator closely resembles Poe in this aspect. The narrator spends many a night reading long forgotten literature in an attempt to forget his own troubles after his loss. This is explained beautifully by Poe with the line “Eagerly I wished the morrow;- vainly I had tried to borrow, / From my books surcease of sorrow- sorrow for the lost Lenore.” (Poe 9-10) No matter how hard he tries; however he can shake the crushing despair that has a firm grip on his emotions. One dreary night the narrator gained an unsuspecting visitor. This visitor came in the form of a raven that flew into his window. The raven torments the man reminding him of his insecurities, his flaws, and his loss. The raven accomplishes all these things by rhythmically answering his pleas with but one word, to quote the raven “nevermore.” Just like the narrator will nevermore see the face of his dead love, he too will never be free from his despair. For as long as the man lives much like Poe he
For some individuals, poetry is a form of freedom and expression. It is one of the many creative ways to release feelings of anger and happiness from the human mind. The intensity of every rhythm and word, and style of each poem allows readers to uncover deeper significance to the context. The rich variety achieved by mixing a combination of human imagination and reality to tell a story with deeper meaning is remarkable. This concept of combining poems and human imagination together was popularized by Edgar Allan Poe. Living an impoverished life, Poe penned stories of horror and mystery into collections of poems and short stories. He expressed his thoughts on paper with great thrill and excitement. Known for his wild imagination that included suspenseful, dark tales, he posed as a literary figure and inspired many across the world.
Pablo Neruda is recognized as an influential poet, still people can’t separate his poetry from his politics; instead, critics analyze him for all he is: the sad, the happy, the political and the personal. Pablo Neruda’s thematic mood changes and progresses in perspective to his poems "Body of a Woman", "Ode to the Yellow Bird", and "The Portrait in the Rock" (in that chronological order). Neruda not only progresses from the first line to the last line in each individual poem but as a poet over time. For Neruda’s readers to feel the shift in tone and the distinctive atmosphere, he uses incredible imagery aided by figurative language and symbolism. Nature is the constant in Pablo Neruda’s poetry, but through the imagery, figurative language,
I found that throughout this poem there was much symbolism within it. Identifying that it was written in first person form showed that this poem relates to the author on a personal basis, and that it was probably written to symbolize his life. But when talking about people’s lives, you can conclude that people’s lives are generally and individually very diffe...
The poem consists of an undeniable narrative structure. Told from the third person, Poe also uses symbolism to create a strong melancholy tone. For instance, both midnight and December symbolize an end of something and the hope of something new to happen. Another example is the chamber in which the narrator is placed, this is used to show the loneliness of the man.

In the poem “A song of Despair” Pablo Neruda chronicles the reminiscence of a love between two characters, with the perspective of the speaker being shown in which the changes in their relationship from once fruitful to a now broken and finished past was shown. From this Neruda attempts to showcase the significance of contrasting imagery to demonstrate the Speaker’s various emotions felt throughout experience. This contrasting imagery specifically develops the reader’s understanding of abandonment, sadness, change, and memory. The significant features Neruda uses to accomplish this include: similes, nautical imagery, floral imagery, and apostrophe.
