The Department of Government and Public Affairs at Gallaudet University and its students are establishing a Gallaudet chapter of a national legal fraternity, Phi Delta Phi (PDP). Phi Delta Phi is the first national legal fraternity that will be set up on Gallaudet campus, and it will be sponsored by the Department of Government and Public Affairs. It is open to like-minded students who are passionate about a future in law.
On the website of the Phi Delta Phi, it states that the Phi Delta Phi was founded only six months after the Columbus, Ohio Bar Association and nine months before the American Bar Association in 1869. Since its founding, it has expanded into Mexico and Europe. It has over one hundred and thirty-one active chapters, which are called Inns.
In the Western Hemisphere, the number of chapters continues to grow each year. At this moment, it has approximately 200,000 members. Former members have varying professions, such as American presidents, judges, governors, senators, representatives, cabinet members, ambassadors, American Bar Association presidents, Association of American Law School presidents, and law school Deans. It is the most highly respected legal fraternity in the country.
According to the Gallaudet Daily Digest, the purpose of Phi Delta Phi is to promote academic excellence, extraordinary growth, and to

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated. was founded January 13, 1913 at Howard University by 22 Undergraduates. These 22 women were members of an organization known as Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated., but branched off because of different views. The founders of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated. wanted more than a social organization and was interested in making the sorority more political. Scholastic and political activism was important to the founders of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated. The first political act the members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated. participated in was the Women’s Suffrage March. The Women’s Suffrage March was a march that occurred in Washington D.C. because Women were not
Phi Sigma Pi is an Honor Fraternity for students in four-year collegiate institutions and Phi Sigma Pi Alumni, founded upon a basis of superior scholarship with the avowed purpose of advancing academic, professional and social ideals. Phi Sigma Pi exist to meet the needs of close fellowship among students of like ideals who are interested in the same end.
Initially, the first reason why Kappa Delta is the best sorority is because of our history. Kappa Delta was founded on October 23, 1897 at State Female Normal School now called Longwood University in Farmville, Virginia. We were founded by four very different women whose ages range ...
The sorority is a local chapter of an national organization. This is one out of one hundred eighty chapters nationally, with the headquaters in Memphis, Tennesse. This chapter is ran by students of the university which works on a national level by many means to raise money for The Make A Wish Foundation. It is our goal
Examining the Greek system is significant to me because Greek life is a dominant tradition in many universities, both academically and socially, and I am interested in understanding why it is so prominent here on campus. Additionally, analyzing the overall structure of the Greek System will allow me to understand why students feel inclined to become a member of these organizations while others don’t. In order to comprehend this student subcult...
...old student at Georgia Tech, is a promising one. Against the odds, he has faced the segregation issue head on, and joined a traditionally white fraternity known as Pi Kappa Phi, as the only African American. Even more uplifting is the fact that he is the president of the fraternity as well.
Walking into college, I always wanted to join a brotherhood. But, it was hard to find the one for me at first. After striking out on a few other fraternities at SEMO, I didn’t know if Greek Life was for me. But after talking one night with Brian Smith, I would give my one last shot to Sigma Nu. Looking back, I couldn’t have been happier with my decision. Over the past few months I have grown into a better person and have achieved goals I wouldn’t have even thought about being able to achieve. Looking back throughout my candidate process I can say I have strived for Love, Truth, and Honor.
Hi Kaitlyn! I am involved in Greek life as well, so I can relate to this! I agree that a huge strength within a sorority are those members who are truly dedicated to their chapter, especially the board members, they are the ones who keep the organization running smoothly (most of the time). A major weakness for a sorority could also be those members who are not as dedicate. I feel like every sorority and fraternity have those members who only care about the social status, and it seems like those are the ones that constantly break the rules and ruin their reputation and put the entire chapter in danger of being put on probation or even kicked off campus. An obvious opportunity for any sorority is kicking out those members who do break the rules
Greek organizations are debatably the most undervalued and misconceived aspect of college campuses. Most people don’t see the benefits that fraternities and sororities bring to college campuses and their communities. Some see these organizations as large beneficial clubs and others see them as potential problems. Many of the allegations put forth by individuals that discredit the benefits and good deeds done by Greek organizations are weak justifications for their removal from college campuses. Greek organizations provide campus communities with academically responsible students, philanthropic activities and increase community involvement.
Day in and day out we hear about high school and college students wanting to pursue a sorority and/or a fraternity based on the stereotypes these organizations uphold, well I chose to differ. I told myself if I ever decided to become a member of a sorority it would be based solely on their ethical standards, history, and values they are founded upon. Alpha Kappa Alpha, Incorporated consists of ladies of distinction and exemplary character who excel in scholarship, leadership, and service, which are qualities I have chosen to uphold. From my perspective, I encourage myself to maintain a respectable appearance and reputation which doing so inspires me to embrace my self-concept; which helps me confidently excel academically and professionally as a “lady of distinction” and “exemplary character.” Most importantly, I continuously remain involved in community service, being involved allows me the opportunity to learn and understand the lives and circumstances of others by opening my mind, heart, and soul. Overall these qualities strengthen my passion to be a member of the prestigious Alp...
Women of Delta, especially the ladies of the Alpha Tau Chapter, excel excessively in everything they accomplish and partake in from what I have seen on Southern Universities campus and in the community. Their outstanding work ethics, academics success, social friendliness, dominating attitudes, and constant need to help others is just a few explanations why I would be honored to be a lovely member of ...
... the fraternity chapter than ourselves. Machiavelli states, “it is far safer to be feared than loved if you cannot be both.”(chap 17). Machiavelli would believe that the pledge process within the Pi Kappa Phi fraternity is being run with a type of government that is cohesive for the greater good of not only the fraternity but the entire community that is surrounding the fraternity. Machiavelli would understand that the end justifies the means of the pledging. Our pledge trainers do not fear being feared more than loved and according to Machiavelli this is one of the characteristics of a good leader.
Every sorority proudly represents an organization, for which their goal is to raise money for. My sorority’s national philanthropy is “Sigma Serves Children” which is carried out through the Robbie Page Memorial for the research of Polio. My sorority chapter sold root beer floats and we made seven hundred dollars for our organization.
The Greek Life at Baylor University is a community of twelve fraternities and eight sororities. However, the communities within Baylor University are not treated equally. The University of Baylor favors the sororities over the fraternities at Baylor. There are multiple different things that Baylor allows the sororities to attain that the fraternities are prevented from pursuing or accomplishing. This bias between the Greek Life of Baylor and the university itself is one major reason for strain between the relationships of the groups. The sororities at Baylor are supplied a meeting place, allowed to have mixers before rushing on Baylor campus, and are allowed to return to Baylor early after breaks for events. The university must resolve these problems in order to become a more unbiased university and community.
According to New Mexico State University, “In the fraternity/sorority, you will be in ‘charge’ of an event or a duty. Everyone in the fraternity/sorority is a leader, whether you’re an officer, on a committee, or just a participant. You will learn by doing. You’ll learn how to manage a budget, run effective meetings, speak in public, and motivate others … skills that will help you in the university and throughout your life. These days it acquires more than just a degree to acquire a good job- it takes leadership experience.(Benefits of Greek Life)” These positions that women and men of Greek life run for actually resemble those of actual positions in the everyday work force. Rochester Institute of Technology says that “Opportunities to learn and practice leadership stretch beyond chapters. There are many system-wide leadership roles open on the IFC, CPC, and MGC. Beyond the Greek community, fraternity men and sorority women involved in many other organizations on campus. Some of these include Student Government, athletic teams, and many student clubs.(Advantages of Greek Life)” This proves, not only do members have positions within their own organization, but numerous have chosen to take in holding other positions all over campus. Many of these
