Being responsible defines a person from the ground up. If someone is not responsible, one is given bad reputation. This paper will describe what responsibility means and the breakdown of the word. Secondly, how being responsible to irresponsible has great differences. Lastly, general uses that show extravagant ways that people show being responsible has a positive impact on ones self and the community thats surrounds a person. I believe that being responsible is one of the most important core values a person can acquire. When the word responsibility is ever spoken of, there are many different definitions that my pop into mind. One may be a person that has caused something to happen, or a task that is required or expected to be done. While those are some great definitions, the six pillar explanation of responsibility will be used in this paper which is “something that you should do because it is morally right.” (dictionary) When the word responsibility is broken down, it has the root word responsible. Categorizing a student, teacher, parent, or any other person as responsible, means giving the independence to act and do the right thing in situations. One does not have to rely on others to guide them on a job or task. The word responsibility can be linked directly to the word independent in a way where the individual is given certain rewards for completing tasks or doing the right thing in situations. But what does it take to be responsible? Being able to properly do the right thing in a morale and legal way. In this essay, I will argue that though Strawson’s Basic Argument is sound, society has constructed a more applicable version of the term “acting morally responsible” which holds us all accountable for our actions. A responsibility is something for which one is held accountable. Often people say that one is responsible for one’s own words and actions; if something happens as a result of something one does one is responsible for it. But is it possible that something could be the result of various actions from different people who are therefore equally responsible, or is there always one person who is most responsible for the incident at hand? Such a situation where this question is relevant is present in the novel A Separate Peace by John Knowles. In the novel, the main character, Gene, ponders his responsibility for the death of his best friend, Phineas or Finny. After reading Gene’s account of the events that led to Finny’s death the reader may observe that there are three people who are all partially at fault for Finny’s death. Gene, a classmate named Brinker, and Phineas all had something to do with the incident, but who was most responsible for it?
