According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), Nigeria has one of the world’s highest deforestation rates of primary forests. Deforestation is the process of cutting down and removing all or most of the trees in a forested area. Nigeria is a country located in the western part of Africa; it is a country that has diversity in forests and wildlife, including several species of both plants and animals. What are the causes of deforestation? Trees are being cut down and used for different purposes, but cutting the trees is resulting to different negative factors affecting our society and also affecting the atmosphere. It can also erode soils, contribute to desertification and the pollution of waterways, and decrease biodiversity through the destruction of habitat. Deforestation occurs due to various human activities; which includes agricultural activities, logging, mining, and urbanization. However the effects of these activities can be solved in a number of ways which includes
Agricultural activities are the causes of deforestation. Agriculture is the process of cultivating plants and rearing of animals for human use. Agricultural activities include slash and bush burning, extreme grazing or nomadic herding, over cropping multiple cropping. These activities which requires more land, leads to deforestation. Agriculture is an important commodity which is in high demand all over the world and is used to feed the growing population. Nigerians depend on agriculture not only as a source of food, but also as a source of income. In order, to fulfill larger demand, larger quantities of food are produced. ...fects. Global warming present itself by affecting the environment by causing drought, floods, change in ecosystem, less fresh water available and other environmental issues. Trees play a big role not only in keeping the soil rich, regulating the water table, providing a stable anchor for soil to lessen soil erosion and providing nutrient rich soil for agriculture but it also helps in the absorption of carbon emission in the atmosphere. Clearly, deforestation has become a vast and seemingly incurable issue; however, there are numerous possible solutions to this environmental problem.
A solution to deforestation might require lots of sacrifices by certain individual but the positive outweighs the negative of its impact on conventional everyday life with its benefits enough to impact the whole country. The process of deforestation involves the cutting down of trees,
