Recommended: A paper about lupus
One kind of autoimmune disease can damage any part of the body and sometimes out of control is known as lupus. People that will most likely be susceptible to lupus are women between ages ten to fifty, and lean towards Asians and African Americans. There are three main types of lupus. Discoid lupus erythematosus occurs when there are red rashes and mainly affects the skin. Drug-induced lupus can be initiated from a limited amount of medicine that only lasts as long as they are used. The last and most common form of lupus is systemic lupus erythematosus or also called SLE. This type involves is capable of affecting any part of the body which can be mild or severe, which is why the first word “systemic” is part of the name.
Lupus is supposedly a twentieth century disease but some of the signs were mentioned from Hippocrates in 400 BC and Paracelsus in 1500 AD. As time passed on, there were Parisian physicians that had officially discovered lupus by describing the marks as a facial rash and ulcers which looked similar to a bite from a wolf. Some believe that this is how the name lupus, meaning wolf in Latin, was originated. Around the same time in Vienna, the first picture taken showed a butterfly shape of the rash, eventually becoming a worldwide symbol for lupus. In the early 1900’s, Sir William Osler reported there were not only rashes but also chest pain, kidney disease, and severe problems that are not a concern to us in today’s world of modern medicine.
In many cases, people with systemic lupus erythematosus tend to have problems with joints, kidneys, lungs, skin, and the heart. Typically one person will not have every probable symptom and will vary among each individual. Mutual signs of lupus are red rashes, unexplained fe...

Lupus is inflammatory disease caused when the immune system attacks its own tissues and organs, and this inflammation affects many different body parts such as the joints, skin, kidneys, blood cells, brain, heart and lungs. Second is the Celiac disease and it is an autoimmune reaction from eating gluten, and it may lead to damage in the small intestine because this disease attacks the villi, the projections that line the small intestine for protection. The last example is Rheumatoid Arthritis, an inflammatory disorder in which affects many joints, mainly in hands and feet, and then causing your joints to painfully swell and possibly cause bone erosion.
The incidence of SLE is 7.6 cases per 100,000 with a prevalence of approximately 68 cases per 100,000 (Bernknopf, Rowley, & Bailey, 2011). It affects women more than men with a 9:1 ratio, and typically affects women of childbearing age (Patel, Fenves, & Colbert, 2012). The mean age of symptom onset was 29 years in the Euro Lupus Project that studied 1000 patients with SLE (“Systemic Lupus Erythematosus”, 2012). Children and older adults are also diagnosed with SLE but at a much lower rate, 8%-15% and 3%-18%, respectively (Arnaud, Mathian, Boddaert, & Amoura, 2010). Patients with ethnic backgrounds have a higher incidence rate with African Americans developing SLE 3-4 times more than Caucasians, unlike drug-induced lupus erythematosus (DILE) which has an equal male to female prevalence yet a higher disease severity in Caucasians (Bernknopf, Rowley, & Bailey, 2011).
Most patients may begin with symptoms of a runny nose, cold or sinusitis that continue to persist longer than normal upper respiratory infections and fail to respond to therapeutic measures. Even though, not all patients experience all of the symptoms, the severity of the disease is different for each patient. Other symptoms can include: arthritic joint pain, blood in urine, cough (with or without presence of blood), fever, inflammation of the ear with hearing problems, inflammation of the eye with vision problems, lack of energy, loss of appetite, nasal membrane ulcerations and crusting, night sweats, numbness of limbs, pleuritis (inflammation of the lining of the lung), rash and/or skin sores, saddle-nose deformity, weakness, fatigue, and weight

Lupus is more common in women than men, and although it can affect people of all ages, it is most commonly developed between 15 and 40. Lupus is also more common in African Americans, Hispanics and Asians.
Lupus comes in four different forms. They are Systemic Lupus Erythematosus, Discoid(cutaneous), Drug-induced Lupus, and Neonatal Lupus. “Systemic lupus is typically the most common form of lupus and generally considered more serious than the other three forms”(www.lupusmn.org). Systemic lupus can also be called SLE(www.lupusmn.org). Symptoms tend to show among patients and c...

One of the most common mysteries in the world is the development of autoimmune diseases. An autoimmune disease is when the immune system, which usually keeps your body healthy thinks that your healthy cells are antigens and attacks them. This is irony right? It is against properties of evolution for an immune system to attack itself causing sickness and possibly death if untreated. There are about 80 different types of autoimmune diseases, which usually have periods of little to no symptoms and worsening symptoms. What particularly creates confusion in the world is the autoimmune disease, inflammatory bowel disease, which affects almost about five million people worldwide.
