Depending on whom you ask, you will get a different definition of what public relations means. So many definitions go into the term public relations and a series of definitions could be combined to further explain what it really means. The most accurate and put together definition of public relations I ever heard was from Dr. Kevin Trowbridge a public relations professor at Belmont University. He defines public relations as “a management function and a strategic communication process which establishes, maintains or builds mutually beneficial relationships between organizations and the publics on who their success or failure depends.” I find this definition covering exactly everything that has to do with public relations. Considering this is …show more content…
In Shannon A. Bowen’s article, All glamour, no substance? How public relations majors and potential majors in an exemplar program view the industry and function, she says “Public relations has failed to show its potential as a valuable contributor in society that helps resolve problems through communication.” She believes that there is many things to be valued in the field of public relations but the world does not see it. She goes back in saying that the professors who teach public relations have not practiced public relations so that’s why the value gets lost in the process. Public relations has to go far beyond the classroom and has to be taken seriously in other fields such as government, journalism, and many other industries so the world could see its worth. Bowen believes that “It would help public relations achieve professional status, help it to attract motivated students with appropriate abilities and goals, and assist in its interaction and functional ability within organizations.” If the value of public relations is taught first within the classroom then in other organizations it will have a higher success rate and people would see the
We now live in a liberal democracy were public opinion influences political action. So as public opinion has sustained an influential presence within politics we have now seen the emergence of public relations within politics. According to Moloney public relations is “the discipline which looks after reputation, with the aim of earning the understanding, support and influencing opinion and behaviour. It is the planned and sustained effort to establish and maintain good will and mutual understanding between organisations and its publics” (Moloney, 2:2006). In relation to politics public relations is about maintaining a positive relationship with the public. Public relations main concern in relation to politics would be the reputation and image...
There are many different theories in the public relations field. This paper will discuss the day to day operations of public relations (PR). This will be followed by discussing each theory in depth. This will include the different types of PR followed by how each theory correlates with these day to day operations. PR is a varied field with many different components that have lasting effects on the company that they work for. The definition of PR practitioner according to “This is PR” is “the intermediary between an organization and all of its publics.”
The most recent definition of public relations, according to the Public Relations Society of America (2012), states that “Public Relations is a strategic communication process that builds mutually beneficial relationships between organizations and their publics.” Through the rapid advancement of modern media and technology, there have never been more outlets and opportunities available for accomplishing the goals of public relations. Believing the development of social media has not created serious changes in the way public relations practitioners go about their duties would be foolish and a fast track to falling behind in this rapid world of communication. The main goals of public relations are “to create, maintain, and protect the organization’s reputation, enhance its prestige and present a favorable image,” as defined by Inc. Magazine’s online encyclopedia. Fundamentally, it is not the goals of public relations that have changed with social media, but it is the means of accomplishing these goals that is dramatically changing.
Public relations are the management function that identifies, establishes and maintains mutually beneficial relationships between an organization and the various publics on whom its success or failure depends.
The media sphere changes every day, mainly because of the dependence on technologies that develop extremely fast. And it means the new concepts and theories in PR get renewed nearly on a daily basis. However, the principles remain the same, and some great, basic concepts still can be applied to the modern age. In my opinion, modern theories (starting from 1980s from Grunig and Hunt) mostly give practical advice and sometimes are not that deep, fundamental. The theoretical basement is rooted to both 19th and 20th century concepts. All of them should be learned by the PR practitioners.
What is public relations? PRIA (2014) defined that it is the process to build, maintain and reinforce mutual understanding between an organization or individual and its publics by the designed, planned and sustained effort. Also, it can be understood as a practice of managing the flow of information between an organization or individual and the public.(Grunig& Hunt 1984) However, these two definitions cannot fully describe the term of “public relations”. A long-standing CIPR definition mention a concept of “goodwill”.(Oliver 2009, p. 11) It implies that PR not only refers to publics’ awareness of the information about an organization or individual, but also highly
Many people who earn their bachelor's degree in communications find careers as public relations specialists. These positions have very broad job descriptions, making the job interesting and exciting.
Public relations not only means making sure the public knows what's going on, but also ensuring everyone within McDonald's is aware of developments in the company. Internal communication with all McDonald's employees is therefore a major part of our public relations programs.
To begin with, these words can be defined and analyse; The term Public Relations first appear in 1827, Eric F.Golman mentioned that O.P Hoyt used the term to describe the concise information of the public opinion (Goldman 1978). Today there are many different definitions of the topic but the generally accepted was offered by the Foundation for Public Relations Research and Education in 1976. They defined it as a management function which helps to build up common lines of correspondences, comprehension, acknowledgement and collaboration between an association and its publics;
Public relations has many definitions and has been explained in different ways, but bottom line public relations is the process of communicating between organizations or individuals with the public/media (IPR, 2012). The main goal is to enhance positive public image in the effort to change public perception and instill change by telling a good story. When it comes to public relations or PR, it applies to businesses, individuals, celebrities, public figures, religious leaders, and anyone else who wants to create a positive image. Many associate public relations with marketing, but marketing is something you pay for and public relations is free. This is why companies can get very competitive to have an edge over their rivals by having a better image in the eyes of the public. Also PR helps the public get to know companies and how they operate. To provide the best service possible, business will conduct surveys in order to identify issues with product and complaints that the public might have. This process of public relations will boost customer relations, increase productive, and create a positive image that will bring in more consumers.
The history of the career field of public relations all started when Julius Caesar hired a team to persuade the citizens that he was doing a good job running the area. Caesar’s influence led to public relations in the Unite States beginning in the 1800’s. Newspapers ran friendly columns to reward advertisers with “free publicity.” Then, in the 20th century, the official job title of “public relations specialist” came into play. Those first public relations specialists were publicity agents and mostly former journalists (Mogel). Now, having a career in public relations most nearly means that a person has the job of creating publicity for a specific brand or person (Lila B. Stair).
There are many definitions of Public Relations and the basic definition is typically the same. However, interpretation of how PR is conducted plays a role in the outcome of many definitions of PR. For example, PR can be positive or negative depending on if the information is skewed with the intent to persuade in a positive or negative manner. Politicians use PR to influence voters to vote for them and to make their opponent look bad. PR encompasses so many areas and includes the public which are both internal and external (Seitel, 2004).
The discipline of public relations is a modern profession which has been in existence for only close to a century; however, it has already taken an important role in the fields of business, government, entertainment and non-profit organizations including educational institutions and healthcare organizations. Public relations professionals are required to have excellent organizational, interpersonal and communication skills and have the ability to persuade the public. It is imperative for PR professionals to effectively communicate with its public in order to establish and maintain a positive relationship. Furthermore, public relations professionals must have the ability to work under pressure and effectively manage crisis which may have detrimental effect on the company and the public it serves. State purpose of paper and an overview of what will be covered in the introduction
