1. Introduction
Hamilton Beazley once said “Knowledge is the new capital, but it’s worthless unless it’s accessible, communicated, and enhanced” (Beazley cited in Field, 2003). With the advent of all the possible tools and technologies available, especially on the internet today, accessing, communicating and enhancing knowledge has become so much easier.
This paper aims to discuss two of these tools and technologies, namely collaborative virtual workspaces and microblogging. These tools and technologies will be defined, how they are used, some of their advantages and disadvantages as well as how they can be utilised in Knowledge Management and Knowledge Management processes.
2. Collaborative Virtual Workspaces
2.1 Defining Collaborative Virtual Workspaces
Collaborative virtual workspaces allow people to work together, share documents, edit collaboratively and hold video and/or audio conferences. This is made possible through use of software created with collaboration specifically in mind. Being virtual workspaces also mean that users can collaborate with one another from anywhere in the world. There is no need for close physical proximity (ed. Young, 2010).
There are a multitude of tools that one can use in order to facilitate collaboration. Google Docs, for example is an online document editing tool that allows one to create, edit, share and access your documents/presentations/spread sheets/forms/drawings from anywhere, any time. At the time of writing this paper, it is free to use to anyone with a Google account and provides 15 GB of storage (https://drive.google.com).

4. Conclusion
It should be clear that when it comes to creating, giving access to, editing and sharing information, collaborative virtual workspaces and microblogging simplifies these processes exponentially. Since they are relatively easy to use or learning how to use them can be easy, it can be easier to argue why to use these tools rather than keep away from them.
If used correctly and efficiently, they can be of great benefit to almost any organisations, especially if these organisations want to promote a culture of information and knowledge sharing as well as where organisations have branches in more than one geographical location. In essence, these tools help make information and knowledge accessible, communicable and may, to a great extent, allow for their enhancement.
For centuries humans have depended on natural evolutionary processes for intelligence. Gathering information or doing simple research was a process that required large amounts of time and equipment until the proper information was found. Over the past several years we have seen how technology has advanced for the better of humanity. The internet has become one of the largest breakthroughs in technology and become one of the most helpful tools created so far.

A virtual team refers to a collection of collaborating persons in geographically dispersed means. This group of persons do work across space, time and organizational boundaries and are connected together via information and telecommunication technologies in order to accomplish one or more organizational goals. The virtual teams do require new array of ways to work across boundaries through processes, systems, technology and people. This does require effective leadership in order to be a success.
The Internet gives us a seemingly endless supply of resources; we can search for information, communicate with others, or use it for our own personal work or pleasure. The Internet connects us to the rest of the evolving world, in all different countries around the world. With the ability to seek information on the Internet, we can gain knowledge about an endless supply of topics. A virtual team is a group of people working interdependently via various types of electronic media across organizational and geographical boundaries for a shared purpose (D’Souza & Colarelli, 2010). Research indicates virtual teams are becoming increasingly popular in organizations across the United States and the world (D’Souza & Colarelli, 2010; Rusman, van Bruggen, Sloep, & Koper, 2010). These teams vary in size, degree of geographic dispersion, prior shared work experience, nature of assignment, and expectations of a common future (Rusman et al., 2010). Although virtual teams have potential advantages like the removal of physical boundaries, the ability to form new partnerships, and optimization of competencies (Chinowsky & Rojas, 2003), they also introduce many challenges that may not be as prevalent in traditional teams.
The methods of communicating for a virtual team consist of different tools than used by a traditional team because “…awareness of others’ activities is more difficult and requires some degree of technological intervention” (Fussell et.al., 1998, p. 276). A virtual team needs to use alternative tools because it has members working from different geographical areas and possibly at different times. A traditional team meets face to face, whereas a virtual team needs the use of technology to operate and interact efficiently. Teleconferencing, video conferencing, faxing, e-mail, and instant messaging are some of the tools available to a virtual team.
To take these objectives one step further the help desk should become an asset that provides solutions in multiple forms of media over a myriad of mediums making the end user aware of the tactical support available for different dynamics. Professional development is one area where collaboration can have an enormous impact on management leadership. When leaders can casually share new approaches and practices with each other through a technology connection to their workplace, both leaders and their team will benefit. One way of doing this is to create an Internet mailing list where they can share questions, problems, solutions, successful techniques, and less successful techniques. The Internet is enabling digital video to achieve professional-quality and two-way interaction.
