Midterm Essay: The Declaration of Independence Thomas Jefferson wanted to be the one to be remembered for writing the Declaration of Independence, all though he was a big part of the well known written piece, he did have some help from outstanding men. Jefferson wanted to do whatever he could to help out his fellow Americans from tyranny. The declaration of Independence was written up in 1776 by Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, Roger Sherman, Robert Livingston and Thomas Jefferson. Three of these men (Benjamin Franklin, John Adams and Thomas Jefferson) are known for being part of the founding fathers. When drafting the Declaration, Jefferson had many motives. These men were called colonizers, and the colonization of the New World progressed over the years. While these colonies were being made, at the same time they were still being governed and taken advantage of by the British. The colonies weren 't happy about being ruled by the British, they specifically thought that King George the Third was horrible . One of the complaints on the declaration shows how King George was being unfair, "He has plundered our seas, ravaged our Coasts, burnt our towns, and destroyed the lives of our people"(Jefferson ). The unhappiness with the British government and the king is what led to the Declaration of Independence. The Declaration was pretty much an official document made by the colonies to the British that they would no longer want to be associated with them. The first sentence of the Declaration illustrates this. " When, in the course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another"(Jefferson ) It was like the colonists were telling the King that they no longer need anything from him, nor want anything to do with him. Eventually the Declaration was what led to the American Revolutionary war as great Britain wouldn 't just let go of the New World and the resources that come with it. It is
July 4th, 1776 was the day the declaration of independence was approved by the Continental Congress. This day represents the Declaration and the birth of the United States of America as an independent nation. The Declaration of Independence started the creation of United States own identity. The identity includes the practice of freedom, individual rights, loyalty, and democracy. The practice of freedom includes religious freedom as-well, there are many religions being practiced in America and everyone has the right to practice the religion they believe in. In the Declaration, when it says," that they are endowed by their Creator with inherent"(Jefferson) it means that people can chose who "their" creator is. Another part of the identity is the respect for human right, even the accused have rights and that torture is an unjust punishment. The idea of "innocent until proven guilty". These are just some examples of the identity of the United States even today. Since the Declaration of Independence America has built its identity and keeps on building it every day. This is just another reason to why the Declaration of Independence is the most important piece of writing in American History till
