Document of Freedom “The Declaration of Independence” by Thomas Jefferson and Others is a document that announced the separation of the thirteen colonies from the British Empire. It was considered treason because it was against the King but as a declaration it would have been a call to arms. In the document it states points with reasons why the colonies want their independence. There are general principles and detail instances stated that are drawn into conclusion at the end. The author creates a sense of urgency in this document because it was originally published in Dunlap broadside, which was distributed to the public and was read out loud. It states their philosophy of government and how it will justify itself if there is a case where the government violates their philosophy. Jefferson and Others states, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness” (804). “Truth to be self-evident” coveys the list in this sentence is true and people know it therefore it does not need to be proven. “Unalienable rights” means legal and natural rights that are gained at birth and cannot be taken away that are “Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness”. This statement is important indicating what the new government will do when it gains its own independence from the British Empire. The King is portrayed as being a horrible leader again because “He has plundered our seas, ravaged our Coasts, burnt our towns, and destroyed the lives of our people” (805). “Plundered our coast,” means stealing goods from a place or person giving an image of the King stealing unalienable Rights from the people in America. It also creates an image of the King taking the right of people to emigrate to America because he created more laws and regulations. The word “ravaged” connotes the King being cruel and unfair creating a visual image of the King being some kind of animal that attacks. “Ravaged our coast” connotes the colonies being destroyed where colonists are losing their possessions and etc. “Burnt our towns” produces an image of the towns being in ruins after a fire leaving the colonist with nothing. “Destroyed the lives of our people ” connotes the King ruining people lives by taking their freedom and making the people in America miserable by destroying such as “ravaged our coast” and “burnt our towns.” “Our people” signifies that the people in America are not part of British because Jefferson is referring to them as “our” that the people are part of the new government that is being created.
